The Laboratory of Organic Electronics (LOE) at Linköping University invites applications for a Principal Research Engineer position in the research group of associate professor Glib Baryshnikov. The successful candidate will contribute to the development and computational investigation of UV-stimulated long-lived radical systems for advanced functional materials and optoelectronic applications.

The Laboratory of Organic Electronics belongs to the Department of Science and Technology and is renowned for its world-leading research on electronic and optical devices based on organic materials. Its primary theme involves the coupling of ions and electrons as signal carriers for applications in organic bioelectronics, printed electronics, organic energy and electrochemical devices, and nanooptics. Research area

The position is embedded within the research activities of Glib Baryshnikov’s group, which focuses on the theoretical design and understanding of open-shell molecular systems, organic radicals, and photoinduced processes in functional materials. Current research addresses the generation, stabilization, and control of long-lived radical species in molecular and polymeric systems, with applications in organic electronics, photonics, energy conversion, and information storage. Particular emphasis is placed on UV-stimulated radical formation mechanisms, excited-state dynamics, spin-dependent phenomena, and structure–property relationships governing radical persistence and functionality. The research combines quantum-chemical modeling, atomistic simulations, and multiscale computational approaches to establish predictive design principles for next-generation radical-based materials.

The position

The Principal Research Engineer will:

  • Lead computational studies of UV-stimulated long-lived radical systems.
  • Perform and develop Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations for electronic structure analysis, excited-state properties, and radical formation mechanisms.
  • Conduct Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations to investigate structural dynamics, radical stability, and environmental effects.
  • Carry out Finite Element Analysis (FEA) simulations to model transport phenomena, device performance, and material behavior at larger scales.
  • Collaborate closely with experimental researchers to interpret results and guide material design.
  • Contribute to scientific publications, reports, and research proposals.
  • Support the development and maintenance of computational infrastructure and simulation methodologies within the group.
  • Contribute to supervision of PhD and master students.

The person we need

The person we need has a PhD in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, Computational Science, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.

Required qualifications;

  • Extensive experience with Density Functional Theory (DFT) simulations.
  • Strong background in Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations.
  • Experience with Finite Element Analysis (FEA) methods and software.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.

Meritorious qualifications:

  • Experience with radical chemistry, organic electronic materials, or photochemical processes.
  • Experience with excited-state calculations and photophysics.
  • Experience in supervision of PhD and master students

The employment
