NAISS, the National Academic Infrastructure for Supercomputing in Sweden, provides academic users with high-performance computing resources, storage capacity, and data services. NAISS is hosted by Linköping University and has 12 partner universities across Sweden.
Do you want to work at the forefront of Europe’s AI development and contribute to building the next generation of AI infrastructure?
We are now looking for up to 4 system developers who want to contribute to the adoption and application of advanced AI methods across a wide range of domains, including technology and tools, data, life science, materials science, autonomous systems, training, and other emerging application areas. These positions offer a unique opportunity to work with researchers, companies, public sector organisations, and AI specialists within EuroHPC’s AI Factory initiative, while making it easy for users to access data and AI solutions and feel confident that laws and regulations are being followed.
We aim to provide services that are easy to use, secure, and reliable, enabling research that often involves sensitive data. We also strive to share what we do in order to help others do the same. We usually build using open standards and free and opensource solutions, but sometimes also use proprietary products that end users are more familiar with in order to facilitate research.
As a DevOps/Service Developer engineer, you will deploy and operate world leading services for AI and data, and help users and projects apply AI methods, tools, and workflows to real-world challenges. Depending on your background and interests, you may contribute within one or more application areas.
We welcome applicants with expertise in Linux DevOps and technologies such as OpenShift Kubernetes, infrastructure as code, continuous deployment and integration (CI/CD), as well as experience with agile ways of working and with developing and operating services for sensitive data, especially in highly regulated areas such as finance or health. You are not expected to cover all areas, and we encourage specialists with deep expertise in their field to apply.
The role combines hands-on technical work, user support, collaboration with domain experts, and participation in the development of AI services and best practices within Sweden AI Factory and the broader European AI ecosystem.
We are a small team, and everyone is expected to contribute where needed according to their abilities. It is quite possible that you may get to “own” an area and become the primary decision-maker/person responsible for it, but you must also be able to document and explain your work to your colleagues. We work according to a standard development cycle, and code review is an important part of the work.
We work extensively with scripting and code-based infrastructure, and you must be able to think like a programmer and take factors such as algorithmic complexity into account. It is also common to need to dig into the source code of various tools to figure out what is going wrong, so being able to read and understand code is important. When we need to build services, we choose modern, maintainable languages that help us avoid mistakes. We do not primarily develop new software; rather, we prefer to glue existing components together as far as possible. As part of the recruitment process, you will be asked to demonstrate your ability in practice. You should also be prepared to discuss code in some form during a possible interview.
Some of the technologies we work with include virtualisation, containerisation and orchestration, block, object and file storage, relays, configuration management, scripting, continuous integration, and infrastructure as code.
We do not expect you to have worked with all of these, but you should have a solid foundation in Unix/Linux and some knowledge of different forms of networking and security:
Service development
Project and user collaboration
Knowledge sharing and community building
Collaboration and innovation
