Navigating AI Rules in Licensing: Don’t Let “Magic” Tools...
500px Blog · 2026-06-26 · via 500px

The rise of AI editing tools has transformed creative workflows. However, when licensing commercial content through 500px, understanding the strict boundaries of AI usage is the difference between growing your sales and facing portfolio rejections. To better understand what is or isn’t acceptable, post-processing is divided into two distinct categories: Retouching and Modification.

The 10% Retouching Rule

If your digital edits affect less than 10% of a photo’s total pixels, you can safely use traditional or AI-powered tools. This includes removing sensor dust, cleaning stray hairs, or removing minor background distractions. Global exposure and color adjustments are also fully acceptable.

However, human subjects must remain entirely authentic. You cannot use AI to alter facial expressions, reshape body proportions, or modify permanent physical features like age, skin texture, ethnicity, or gender expression.

Basically, the more AI tools you use, the more likely it is that your photos will be rejected for licensing. Repeat offenses will result in your account being suspended or even banned.

Going Big? Go Traditional

The moment your work shifts toward substantial changes, you enter the Modification category. This includes altering more than 10% of a photo’s total pixels, extending canvas sizes via generative fill, or creating complex composites.

For all modifications, generative AI tools are completely banned. If you are manipulating large areas or using smart features relying on text prompts or “magic” generative technology, your photos will be rejected. Only make heavy edits using strictly traditional, non-generative tools with elements you completely own the rights to.An AI expert optimizing a deep learning model, representing the technical boundaries between artificial intelligence and authentic photography.

Zero Tolerance for AIGC

Fully AI-generated content (AIGC) is strictly prohibited. Every submission must originate from a physical camera sensor, and all models must be real individuals with valid releases.

Violating these guidelines can trigger automatic rejection or account suspension. Keep your editing compliant, protect your Licensing revenue, and let’s keep 500px as a place where authentic photography shines!
