Several Carnegie Mellon University School of Computer Science faculty members are among the inaugural class of the Association for Computing Machinery Special Interest Group on Software Engineering (ACM SIGSOFT) Software Engineering Academy. The new honorary body recognizes individuals whose lasting contributions have shaped the field of software engineering.

The academy launched July 14 with its first cohort of 80 researchers, educators and practitioners selected for their cumulative impact on software engineering research, practice and education. The academy will elect new members annually through community nominations.

Current SCS faculty members named to the inaugural class include Randal Bryant, a former dean of the school and the Founders University Professor of Computer Science Emeritus; David Garlan, professor in the Software and Societal Systems Department (S3D) and associate dean for master's programs; James Herbsleb, professor in S3D; Corina Păsăreanu, adjunct research professor in CyLab; Mary Shaw, the Alan J. Perlis University Professor of Computer Science; and Jeannette Wing, adjunct professor of computer science.

John Goodenough of the Software Engineering Institute was also named to the academy's first class, as were SCS alumni and former faculty.

The academy and its inaugural class were previewed earlier this month during the ACM SIGSOFT International Symposium on Foundations of Software Engineering in Montreal as part of the organization's 50th anniversary celebration. Additional members are expected to be announced in late August.
