Postdoc in Organic Bioelectronics
2026-05-26 · via Available vacancies

We are now looking to appoint a postdoc in organic bioelectronics, placed in the Laboratory of Organic Electronics at the Department of Science and Technology, Campus Norrköping.

Research area

To advance bioelectronics and biointerfaces, we seek a postdoctoral researcher to contribute to the development of next-generation implantable bioelectronic systems for biomedical applications. Our work focuses on in situ formation of organic electronic materials in living environments, enabling new ways to create soft, adaptive, and spatially precise interfaces with biological tissue (see, for example, Strakosas et al., Science, 2023, https://doi.org/10.1126/science.adc9998).

This position addresses the emerging opportunity to bridge conventional implantable devices with bio-integrated, in situ formed electronic functionality, with particular relevance for neuromodulation and neuropharmacology, including applications in Parkinson’s disease and related movement disorders.

You will join a highly collaborative effort aimed at establishing new principles for electronic functionalization of living systems, where biological structure and signaling guide both the formation and operation of electronic materials.

The successful candidate will have strong problem-solving skills, be able to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary and international team and have excellent communication abilities. This is an exciting opportunity to work at the interface between chemistry, biology, and electronics in the highly collaborative and supportive Laboratory of Organic Electronics (https://www.liu.se/loe).

Your work will primarily be under the guidance of Asst. Prof. Xenofon Strakosas (https://liu.se/en/employee/xenst86) with additional guidance by Prof. Daniel Simon (https://liu.se/en/employee/dansi08), Organic Bioelectronics (OBE) group leader at the Laboratory of Organic Electronics.

If you are passionate about advancing the field of organic bioelectronics and meet the qualifications, we encourage you to apply and become a part of this transformative research journey.

Duties and key responsibilities

The position involves leading and contributing to research on bioelectronic devices and systems that integrate implanted structures with in situ formed conductive materials. In particular, the work will explore how device-level architectures (e.g., flexible or stent-based electronics) can interface with materials formed directly in biological environments, for example through enzymatic or photopolymerization processes.

A central aspect of the work is to develop and understand extended electroactive interfaces, where electronic functionality is distributed through tissue via biologically guided material formation. This includes fabrication and characterization of materials and devices, as well as their integration into concepts for neuromodulation in deep brain regions relevant to Parkinson’s disease.

The project sits at the interface between materials science, device physics, and biology, and the exact direction can be shaped depending on the candidate’s background and interests. The work may include:

  • Design and fabrication of bioelectronic devices (e.g., flexible or stent-based systems)
  • Development and characterization of in situ polymerized conductive materials
  • Electrochemical and electrical characterization of materials and interfaces
  • Integration of materials and devices in biologically relevant environments (in vitro and, through collaboration, potentially in vivo)
  • Contribution to system-level concepts for bioelectronic therapies

You will also contribute to scientific publications, presentations, and collaborative projects with national and international partners.

As postdoc, you will principally carry out research. A certain amount of teaching may be part of your duties, up to a maximum of 20% of working hours.

Qualifications

To be qualified to take employment as postdoc, you must have been awarded a doctoral degree or have a foreign degree that is deemed to be equivalent to a doctoral degree.  This degree must have been awarded at the latest by the point at which LiU makes its decision to employ you.

It is considered advantageous if your doctoral degree is no older than three years at application deadline for this job. If there are special reasons for having an older doctoral degree – such as taking statutory leave – then these may be taken into consideration.

The following education, experience, and expertise are required:

  • A PhD in biomedical engineering, (bio-)physics, applied physics, materials science, (organic) chemistry, or equivalent
  • Experience with optical characterization of materials (e.g., UV-Vis absorption)
  • In vitro electrophysiological methods (e.g., patch clamp recording, multiple-electrode array recordings, or OECT recordings)
  • Work with cell studies (in vitro studies)
  • Microscopy of cells and cell clusters (e.g., confocal and/or fluorescence microscopy)
  • Peer-reviewed publication as first or lead author
  • Demonstrated scientific presentation skills
  • Written and oral proficiency in English (all activities at the Laboratory of Organic Electronics are conducting in English)

In addition, the following areas are of particular merit:

  • Experience with organic (bio)electronics, implant design, and/or conducting polymers (ideally all areas of expertise listed)
  • Experience with the chemistry of aggregation, pi-stacking, and/or self-organization (ideally all areas of expertise)
  • Experience with electron microscopy, in particular SEM
  • Experience with thin film preparation and characterization methods
  • Experience with calcium imaging of cell activity

And the following areas are of additional merit:

  • Experience in cleanroom facilities
  • Experience with one or more electrochemical methods
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, including experience in producing comprehensive, high-standard reports and data visualization, and contributing to manuscript writing

Great emphasis will be placed on personal qualities and suitability.

The workplace

This position will be at the Laboratory of Organic Electronics (LOE, http://liu.se/loe) where we explore electronic and optical properties of organic semiconductors, biomaterials from the forest, and hybrid organic materials. LOE shares a common interest in exploiting the combination of electronic and ionic charge for use in energy, internet-of-things, health care and biology applications. Research topics include synthesis, material science, theory and modeling, device physics, nanotechnology, biotechnology and system design, and span the range from basic research to commercialization. LOE currently has >160 researchers and research students across 13 groups sharing an open lab environment for fruitful collaboration and information sharing.

You will formally be part of LOE’s Organic Bioelectronics group (https://liu.se/en/research/organic-bioelectronics), led by Prof. Daniel Simon (https://liu.se/en/employee/dansi08). LOE is part of Linköping University’s Department of Science and Technology, located on the river Motala Ström at Campus Norrköping.
