Work assignments

The purpose of the employment is that the assistant professor is to be given the opportunity to develop independence as a researcher and to obtain both the research and teaching qualifications required for employment as associate professor.

The Computer Vision and Learning systems (CVL) is looking for an assistant professor in machine learning with a focus on computational photography. CVL is a division at the Department of Electrical Engineering (ISY), a vibrant research environment with a total of 38 employees, including 9 researchers, 18 PhD students, and several adjunct researchers. CVL conducts research and education at undergraduate, master, and doctoral levels in machine learning within computer vision.

The division has been recognized as one of Sweden's best AI research environments in Vinnova's previous report, and LiU is Sweden's strongest AI university according to their latest report. We have activities within WASP (Wallenberg), ELLIIT ( Excellence center), and LiU's profile area VDF (Visual Digital Futures). For more information about our work, please visit our website.

For this role, we collaborate with the Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program, WASP, which is Sweden's largest individual research program in modern times. The program creates a platform for academic research and education in close collaboration with leading Swedish technology-intensive industry. The research includes artificial intelligence and autonomous systems that operate in collaboration with humans and adapt to their environment using sensors, information, and knowledge, creating intelligent systems of systems.

WASP's vision is excellent research and competence in artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, and software for the benefit of Sweden's industry and society. Read more: WASP- Sweden.

An important part of WASP is an international recruitment program, and the current announcement aims to strengthen Linköping University specifically in machine learning as part of the AI focus within WASP. The goal is to complement existing expertise in the area of computer vision with trustworthy visual data.

As an assistant professor, you will work with machine learning with a particular focus on trustworthy visualdata. The specific focus is on research and development of methods and mathematical analysis relevant to trustworthy generative visual models, with particular emphasis on uncertainty quantification, bias and fairness and statistical and geometric properties of visual and simulated data. The general focus is on research and development of algorithms, methods, and theories aimed at better understanding the properties and underlying mechanisms within statistical and deep learning-based systems also in the presence of simulated data. As an assistant professor, you are also expected to explore application areas within material and life science as well as security and digital forensics, supported by an interdisciplinary research profile that combines computer science and applied statistics with experience in quantitative, data-driven research, method development, and collaboration across disciplinary boundaries.

You are active in the research community, participate in the division's activities such as seminars and workshops, participate in research projects, communicate results through scientific publications and help attract external research funding.

You contribute actively to the university's development work. Collaboration is an integral part of the university's research and education mission. Collaboration in research occurs by spreading, making accessible, and utilizing research.

The position may also involve administrative tasks, such as handling invitations to local seminar activities. We welcome your participation and interest in leadership tasks.

You will mainly work with research and PhD education. Subject to independent decisions from WASP, funding for your own salary and operations for five years is included, as well as funding for two postdoctoral researchers (2+2 years) and two PhD students (4+4 years). You are expected to be responsible for your own research group and engage in WASP's graduate school, WASP's national meetings, and other activities. You are also expected to actively seek additional external research funds to secure the establishment of an independent research group. The duties include approximately 20 percent teaching.

Your work includes monitoring developments nationally and internationally within your field of study and other societal developments that are important to your work.

You are flexible and have the ability to move between different types of pedagogical and scientific contexts. You share knowledge and contribute to the working group’s professional development, collegial ways of working and social community. The fact that you are present and active is something we see as self-evident in order to ensure that you are able to perform your duties in an optimum way and enjoy your working community.

Qualifications

We are looking for someone with a doctoral degree or equivalent scientific competence. Primarily, we are seeking candidates who have obtained their doctoral degree within the last seven years.

For this position, primary emphasis will be placed on scientific proficiency, secondary emphasis on pedagogical proficiency, and tertiary emphasis on other skills that are considered equivalent.

Regarding scientific proficiency, demonstrated experience in projects within the subject, including the development of methods and mathematical models, publications, and the use of technical equipment for image acquisition, is particularly meritorious.

Regarding pedagogical proficiency, experience in supervising students and PhD students within the subject is considered particularly meritorious.

Documented proficiency in collaboration within research is also particularly meritorious for the position.

Other skills that will be assessed for this position include technical proficiency and the ability to collaborate in a group. Experience in programming machine learning models and hardware for image acquisition is particularly meritorious.

Since teaching and research are largely conducted in English, you must be able to demonstrate the ability to teach and conduct research in English.

We are looking for a person with good collaboration skills, who works well with others and relates to them in a responsive and smooth manner. You listen and communicate constructively. You have independence and the courage to act according to your own convictions. You are outgoing and socially active in professional contexts, create contacts, and maintain relationships. You easily adapt to changing circumstances, can quickly change your perspective and approach, and see opportunities in changes.
