The best thing ever written about GEL
Mark Hurst · 2026-09-09 · via Creative Good

Just a quick update to point you to a fabulous article in Chronogram, a magazine in the Hudson Valley:

GEL Conference Returns After 10 Years, Coming to Accord

Mark Hurst revives the GEL Conference at Skate Time in Accord, bringing talks, Hudson Valley excursions, community-building, and a roller-skating party together October 2–3.

This is the best article that has ever been written about GEL in its (now) 23-year history: it perfectly expresses the intent of the conference which is now just three weeks away.

As the accompanying Chronogram newsletter put it, referring to our conference venue, Skate Time: Can a roller rink defeat Silicon Valley?

I certainly hope so. And you can help: take a look at the article and share it with anyone you know who would be interested in these themes.

A grid of speaker photos followed by text: "Can a roller rink defeat Silicon Valley? After a decade-long hiatus, Mark Hurst's GEL Conference returns October 2-3, trading its former Manhattan setting for Skate Time in Accord. The multidisciplinary gathering pairs talks on technology, art, community radio, local enterprise, and alternatives to Big Tech with Hudson Valley excursions, small-group conversations, and a roller-skating party. Hurst believes gathering face-to-face can create something trillion-dollar platforms cannot: genuine community. Can a roller rink defeat Silicon Valley? He thinks it can, together, in real life."

More soon!
