Located in Patton, Pennsylvania, the Rogue Wind Farm project is a vital source of renewable energy for the region. Building in a rural area presented unique logistical hurdles, requiring the strategic placement of a portable concrete plant to manage the raw materials needed for these massive foundations. Engineers on this project were particularly concerned with managing the heat of hydration in such large mass concrete placements.

To keep temperatures under control, the team scheduled pours overnight and utilized a 35 percent slag cement replacement. This was paired with ice to lower the temperature of the mix and high performance plasticizers to ensure the concrete remained pumpable and easy to place. The inclusion of slag cement was a multi-purpose solution. It provided the sulfate resistance necessary for the local soil conditions and acted as a critical tool for temperature control.

Beyond those protective qualities, the performance results were outstanding. While the design called for 4,500 psi, the slag-rich mix delivered a 7-day average of 5,900 psi and reached over 8,100 psi at the 28-day mark. By using slag cement to achieve both early and long-term strength gains, the team was able to speed up the construction schedule while ensuring these wind turbines stand on a foundation that is as durable as it is sustainable.
