Farmington Hills, Mich., (April 28, 2026) – The Slag Cement Association (SCA) successfully concluded its fifth annual Slag Cement School in Wilmington, Delaware. Held April 21 and 22, the educational event featured comprehensive technical presentations on the benefits of slag cement in concrete design and construction, alongside discussions on sustainability tools and resources available to the concrete industry. On the second day, attendees participated in an exclusive, behind-the-scenes tour of Heidelberg Materials’ newly acquired slag cement plant.

SCA President Herb Moeckel welcomed industry professionals who traveled from across the United States to attend the school. The curriculum offered a deep dive into critical industry topics, beginning with fundamental slag cement production and cementitious properties presented by Jason Murtha of Heidelberg Materials. Clayton McCabe of Quikrete and Shawn Kalyn of St Marys Cement discussed the evolution of blended cements and leveraging slag cement under the new ASTM C595 framework. Additional sessions highlighted case studies on concrete performance across a wide slag replacement range by Dr. Xiuping Feng of Ozinga, mid-Atlantic concrete challenges addressed by Henry Prenger of Amrize, and the state of low-carbon concrete in the built environment presented by Kerry Sutton of NEU: An ACI Center of Excellence for Carbon Neutral Concrete.

"Our goal with the Slag Cement School is to bridge the gap between technical standards and real-world application," said Nick Brimley, SCA Director of Membership and Marketing. "By highlighting detailed case studies and proven project successes, we are able to show industry professionals exactly how slag cement creates more resilient and sustainable concrete."

In addition to the technical presentations, the event included interactive panel discussions and networking opportunities for industry professionals. The success of the 2026 Slag Cement School was made possible through the generous support of its sponsor: Advancing Organizational Excellence (AOE).
