Located in Tonawanda, New York, just north of Buffalo and south of Niagara Falls, the Old Dominion Freight Facility chose an innovative pavement design to create a durable and efficient cross-dock hub. This project required nearly 8,800 cubic yards of concrete to construct an eight-inch exterior slab capable of handling the heavy, continuous demands of a major freight operation.

To meet these requirements, the team utilized a high-performance 4,500 psi concrete mix that featured a strategic 15 percent slag cement replacement. By using a blended cement that combined portland-limestone cement with interground slag, the project successfully reduced CO2 emissions while maintaining or even exceeding the original structural specifications.

The logistical execution of the project was as impressive as the material science. Working over a 44-week period, the team placed the concrete via pump and utilized laser screeds and curing machines to ensure a level, high-quality finish across the massive pavement area.

The use of slag cement was the deciding factor in achieving the durability and strength characteristics needed for a long-lasting industrial surface. The Old Dominion project proves that by integrating sustainable materials like slag cement, we can build the heavy-duty logistics infrastructure of the future without sacrificing performance or environmental responsibility.
