The Department of Biomedical Engineering (IMT) conducts advanced research at the intersection of engineering and neuroscience, with a focus on the development and clinical application of minimally invasive instrumentations, modelling, and simulation. Neuroengineering is an interdisciplinary research field within biomedical engineering that develops technical systems for measuring, modulating, modelling, and understanding the function of the nervous system. The field encompasses hardware-oriented instrumentation, signal and image processing, data-driven and physics-based models, as well as clinical validation and implementation. Neuroengineering increasingly incorporates AI‑based approaches to support personalised diagnostics and therapy.

Neuroengineering research is interdisciplinary and includes areas such as deep brain stimulation, neuronavigation, optical measurement techniques, and cerebral microcirculation. with the aim of improving the diagnosis, treatment, and understanding of neurological conditions.

Work assignments 

The position involves research in Neuroengineering with a focus on biomedical instrumentation, signal and image processing, modelling and simulation, and data-intensive methods and AI‑based approaches for analysis and decision support. The position also involves technology transfer, evaluation, and implementation in clinical care.

The role requires a technical background and experience of collaboration with clinical researchers in the field, where technology transfer, evaluation, and implementation in healthcare are central. The position also includes undergraduate teaching and administrative duties. As Professor in Neuroengineering, you will supervise undergraduate students and PhD students, contribute to pedagogical development, and academic mentorship within the research area. The role further includes responsibility for contributing to the development of education in biomedical engineering and Neuroengineering at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

You are active within the research community, participate in the division’s activities such as seminars and workshops, engage in research projects, disseminate results through scientific publications, and contribute to securing external research funding.

Interaction is an integral part of the Linköpings University’s research and educational mission, encompassing the dissemination, accessibility, and utilisation of research. Your work includes following the development nationally and internationally within your subject area and of broader societal developments relevant to your work.

In terms of scientific excellence, the following will be assessed

Requirements for the position:

  • An established and active research program in Neuroengineering.
  • Deployment of engineering-based methods for development and analysis.
  • Experience of research conducted in close collaboration with clinical researchers.
  • Demonstrated ability to attract substantial external research funding.

Of merit for the position:

  • Experience in building strong and attractive research environments.
  • An established research program in biomedical instrumentation, including signal and image processing, computational modelling, and simulation.
  • Experience of close collaboration with clinical researchers in neuroscience.
  • Experience of technology transfer, evaluation, and implementation within healthcare.

Assessment of Pedagogical Excellence

Requirements for the position:

  • Experience in supervising PhD students.

Of merit for the position:

  • Experience in planning, delivering, evaluating, reflecting on, and developing teaching.
  • Experience leading and developing pedagogical activities.

Assessment of Collaborative Skills

  • Experience in collaboration with industry, healthcare, and/or other external partners.

Requirements for the position:

  • Demonstrated strategic leadership in research, for example through national and international collaborations.

Teaching and research are conducted in both Swedish and English. You must be able to teach and carry out research in English, and it is desirable that you can teach and conduct research in Swedish within two years.

You will work at the Division of Biomedical Engineering (MT), which conducts research that connects medicine and engineering. At MT, we collaborate with healthcare clinics as well as engineers from industry, who, together with our international colleagues and visiting students, contribute to a diverse and exciting environment. Our location at the Campus University Hospital (Campus US) at Linköping University creates a unique opportunity for research, collaboration, and development within the field.
