Three inaugural Horizon Networks selected by CIFAR to adv...

Each Network is co-led by two experienced mid-career researchers who will bring together eight faculty members and 10 trainees across disciplinary and geographic boundaries.

Following a competitive review process, CIFAR is pleased to announce three inaugural Horizon Networks selected to pursue interdisciplinary research across early childhood development. 

Horizon Networks are a new form of programming focused on supporting promising early- and mid-career researchers from diverse disciplines and institutions for three-year, interdisciplinary research collaborations designed to advance foundational research questions and produce imaginative, globally relevant research agendas.

Each Network is co-led by two experienced researchers and will include eight additional faculty, each of whom invites a senior graduate student or postdoctoral fellow, bringing the full Network to 20 participants.

“Supporting the next generation of research leaders to build meaningful careers and conduct impactful research is a key tenet of CIFAR’s Strategy. We’re proud to continue investing in emerging researchers and creating opportunities for them to grow, connect and catalyze change through this initiative,” says Kate Geddie, Executive Director of Research.

The inaugural Horizon Networks share a common focus on exploring early childhood and youth development through the lenses of belonging, civic engagement and identity, as well as education and learning variability. 

“The focus on early childhood and youth development builds on CIFAR’s historic strengths and complements the work of the Child & Brain Development, Boundaries, Membership & Belonging, and Brain, Mind & Consciousness research programs, as well as the longstanding commitment of the Bezos Family Foundation and the Jacobs Foundation to supporting research on early development and learning,” says Rachel Parker, Head of Next Generation Initiatives and the Azrieli Chair for Next Generation Initiatives at CIFAR. 

“We’re pleased to build on these strengths to deepen our understanding of the earliest and most formative years of life by supporting these teams of emerging leaders.”

Two Horizon Networks are supported by the Bezos Family Foundation and one is supported by the Jacobs Foundation as part of the Jacobs CIFAR Research Fellowship partnership. 

Selected Horizon Networks are:

Stream 1: Belonging with Nature, Technology and People in Early Childhood

Childhood in a Changing Climate

Co-led by Allyson Mackey (CIFAR Azrieli Global Scholar 2020-2022 in Child & Brain Development, Jacobs Research Fellow 2017-2019, University of Pennsylvania) and Jorge Cuartas (Jacobs CIFAR Research Fellow 2026-2028, Universidad de los Andes)

Initial Network members:

  • Emily Foster-Hanson (Swarthmore College)
  • Andrew Koepp (New York University)
  • Francis Vergunst (University of Oslo) 
  • Pamela Wadende (Kisii University)

This team will explore how families, educators and institutions can strengthen children’s knowledge of climate change and the natural world to catalyze climate action. 

Stream 2: Adolescence – Belonging, Identity and Civic Engagement in a Changing World

Adolescence and the Civic Self

Co-led by Katherine McAuliffe (CIFAR Azrieli Global Scholar 2017-2019 in Brain, Mind & Consciousness, Jacobs Research Fellow 2022-2024, Boston College) and Joshua Shepherd (CIFAR Azrieli Global Scholar 2019-2021 in Brain, Mind & Consciousness, ICREA/Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona). 

Initial Network members:

  • Yarrow Dunham (Yale University)

The team will explore the social-cognitive processes underlying the development of civic values during adolescence.

Stream 3: Education and Learning Variability

Learning through Conversation

Co-led by Rene Kizilcec (Jacobs Research Fellow 2022-2024, Cornell University) and Sho Tsuji (Jacobs Research Fellow 2022-2024, CNRS/Ecole Normale Supérieure)

Initial Network members:

  • Chi (Zoe) Ngo (Jacobs Research Fellow 2022-2024, Max Planck Institute for Human Development) 
  • Jeanine Grütter (Jacobs Research Fellow 2023-2025, Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich) 
  • Sébastien Goudeau (Jacobs Research Fellow 2023-2025, Université de Poitiers)

This team will explore key questions such as: How does conversation input help children move from concrete experience to abstract concepts? And how does this process vary across children, languages, cultures and learning environments?
