Even in the midst of promoting The Odyssey, Christopher Nolan was already thinking ahead to his next move—and it could have meant venturing into the world of horror. The celebrated filmmaker recently told The Hollywood Reporter that he was interested in exploring a genre he hasn’t truly tackled: horror. Still, he made clear he wouldn’t wade in without a script he considered bulletproof.

Nolan Considers Horror—But Only With the Right Script

Nolan’s curiosity was piqued after being told that some scenes in The Odyssey were genuinely horrific. He responded:

“It really makes me want to explore further,”

clearly intrigued by the genre.

Nolan, however, stressed the importance of having a compelling concept before moving forward:

“I've always thought that horror, as a genre, needs to be approached with a lot of conceptual caution. In other words, you need a genius idea.”

He elaborated on what makes horror resonate:

“When you watch a film like Obsession, that's it—a genius idea. That film works brilliantly. It's not a question of technique. It's not a matter of technical details for me to sort out. It's about the story. So I'm always on the lookout.”

An Ongoing Temptation

This wasn’t the first time Nolan signaled his interest in trying horror. In 2024, during a talk at the British Film Institute, he had shared his wish to take on the genre, pointing out that he had already incorporated unmistakable horror elements in the Dark Knight trilogy and in Oppenheimer. Nolan’s fascination with the unsettling had long been a thread in his work.

What Comes After The Odyssey?

Whether his next project after The Odyssey would have been a full-fledged horror film remained uncertain. Nolan stated he would wait for a story that met his high standards. For now, he made it clear: he remained on the lookout for the right idea to put his stamp on horror—if, and only if, the story matched his ambitions.
