The headline health feature monitors for severe, persistent drops in blood oxygen using a combination of PPG, accelerometer, and barometer sensors run through on-device AI. If it detects a breathing emergency and you're unresponsive, the watch can call emergency services and send your location automatically, though Google says this is launching first in Europe rather than everywhere at once.

That sits alongside three new monthly trend reports covering blood pressure, sleep breathing quality, and insulin resistance, built on health models Google trained against clinical-grade measurements. None of these are diagnostic tools, but they're aimed at catching slow drifts in your health before they become emergencies.

On the AI side, Raise to Talk now processes core Gemini actions with low latency even when you're offline, and Proactive Suggestions can surface things like dinner reservations pulled straight from your Gmail without you digging through your phone. A new double-pinch gesture lets you confirm and send those suggestions hands-free.

Why It Matters

Loss of Pulse Detection and satellite SOS already put Pixel Watch ahead on emergency features, and Breathing Emergency Detection extends that same idea to a much more common scenario: someone unconscious and not breathing properly, whether from an accident, illness, or overdose. It's a meaningful addition even with the Europe-first rollout limiting who gets it on day one.

The GPS upgrade matters just as much for anyone who actually exercises with this thing. Google says it's now twice as accurate as the previous generation in dense urban environments, using 3D building modeling borrowed from Google Maps and real-time atmospheric corrections, and claims it beats both the Apple Watch Ultra 3 and Garmin Fenix 8 Pro in its own testing.

Under the hood, Pixel Watch 5 runs a Qualcomm Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 Accelerated processor with 50 percent more RAM and a 12 percent CPU bump, adding up to what Google calls a 20 percent overall speed increase over Pixel Watch 4. Battery life lands at up to 30 hours on the 41mm model and 40 hours on the 45mm.

The display is a 3,000-nit domed Actua 360 panel, and Google added 11 new complication styles along with generative watch faces that adapt to your personal style.
