Disney’s home video division has announced that it will be bringing 20th Century Studios’ The Devil Wears Prada 2 to 4K Blu-ray on July 28, only a month after the film makes its streaming bow on Disney+ and Hulu on June 30.

While the film’s massive $677 million global theatrical run made it odds on that Disney’s home entertainment division would take the plunge on a 4K disc release of the sequel to 2006’s comedy hit, I have to admit that I’d wondered if the apparent reluctance I’ve noticed from some studios to release 4K disc versions of films targeted at predominantly female target audiences might see The Devil Wears Prada 2 only becoming available on DVD and HD Blu-ray disc.

Actually, though, not only is the Meryl Streep/Anne Hathaway/Emily Blunt triple header coming to the AV world’s current best quality physical media format, but it’s being released with a set of extra features that includes a feature-length commentary track: A type of feature that again all-too-often seems reserved for the home entertainment releases of long-established classics or films that skew towards a male audience.

It’s probably a stretch to read into this a definite shift towards the big movie studios recognising that hey, women can be cinephiles too; that $677 million box office take remains the most likely explanation for Disney/20th Century Studios going the extra mile on picture quality and extra features for The Devil Wears Prada 2’s home entertainment options. But it’s great to see it happening, no matter what the motivation behind it.

'The Devil Wears Prada 2' is hoping to build on its impressive theatrical run with its digital and wide range of physical media home entertainment options.

When it comes to the technical details of The Devil Wears Prada 2’s 4K Blu-ray release, the PG-13-rated film will be presented in its theatrical 21:9 aspect ratio at (of course) 4K resolution, with both premium Dolby Vision and core HDR10 high dynamic range presentations available. The Dolby Vision master will automatically play for anyone with DV-capable TV and 4K Blu-ray players, but if you don’t have a Dolby Vision-capable 4K Blu-ray player or TV/projector, the HDR feed will default down to HDR10.

The 4K HDR video will be accompanied by a Dolby Atmos soundtrack (versus the 7.1 DTS-HDMA soundtrack supplied on the HD Blu-ray release), with all the picture and sound assets going onto a 66GB 4K Blu-ray disc. 100GB discs are available, but the 66GB option should be big enough to accommodate the film’s 120-minute running time without any major compromises to picture or sound quality.

That commentary track I mentioned earlier features director David Frankel, writer Aline Brosh McKenna, and costume designer Molly Rogers, while the other bonus features provided will comprise a gag reel and four behind the scenes featurettes:

  • Level Up: Updating the Icons: Join the cast, crew, and other notables as they look back on the iconic first film and its timelessness. Then see how the characters and their wardrobes have evolved for the sequel, and follow the shoot in New York.
  • Inside the Fashion Closet: Sit down with the cast, filmmakers, and lead costume designer Molly Rogers as she talks about dressing Miranda, Andy, Emily, and Nigel. Discover their of-the-moment but timeless fashion looks that shine a spotlight on each of their personalities.
  • Front-Row Access: Shooting in Italy: Join the cast, crew, and director David Frankel as he talks about the production in Italy and shooting during Milan’s fashion week. Hear how top design houses supported the production and how Runway’s own fashion show and concert was created.
  • “Runway” Music Video by Lady Gaga and Doechii: Watch Lady Gaga and Doechii in their music video for The Devil Wears Prada 2's new song, “Runway.”
