Big news for drivers who rely on WhatsApp: the world's most popular messaging app has finally added practical features that motorists have been waiting for – and yes, it’s about time!

WhatsApp Upgrades Land on Android Auto and CarPlay

Android Auto and CarPlay are popular infotainment systems, used by millions of drivers worldwide. Android Auto is developed by Google, while CarPlay comes from Apple. Both platforms support widely used apps, and as of July 2026, Meta—the company behind WhatsApp—has begun rolling out long-anticipated updates for drivers.

Essential Voice Features Arrive Behind the Wheel

Until now, WhatsApp in the car was limited to dictating messages and making calls. On CarPlay, users generally had to rely on Siri for any interaction. Now, after this update, WhatsApp on both Android Auto and CarPlay can read incoming messages aloud. Drivers can then dictate responses, all hands-free, without touching their phone. This feature, missing for years, is now finally available, making texting while driving both easier and safer.

Call History, Favorites, and an Easier Interface

Call history is now visible directly on the vehicle’s display, allowing drivers to revisit recent conversations at a glance. Favorite contacts can be called with a single press—features that were unavailable before Meta’s overhaul. There is also a dedicated WhatsApp icon on the car’s home screen for both Android Auto and CarPlay. This icon may seem minor, but many regular users found its absence inconvenient.

Safer Messaging for the Road

This update aims to tackle distracted driving—a genuine safety hazard caused by composing messages on a smartphone when behind the wheel. Voice command integration keeps drivers’ hands on the wheel and eyes on the road, a move that aligns with broader safety-focused improvements like the addition of Google Gemini to Android Auto.

Meta is rolling out these features gradually, as usual. There is no specific date; availability has reportedly varied by device and region throughout recent weeks. The features arrive via a WhatsApp app update on your smartphone—nothing new needs to be installed in your vehicle itself.

WhatsApp now boasts close to two billion users globally. While not all use the app in their cars, there are millions who do. For these users, the new features are a welcome and much-needed addition to Android Auto and CarPlay.
