Ten years into building 360 cameras, Insta360 just made the case that you shouldn't need three separate cameras anymore. X6 launched today as the company's new 8K flagship, and the real pitch isn't sharper video, it's that one camera now covers what used to take a 360 cam, a tracking gimbal, and a dedicated action cam.

What's New

X6 shoots native 8K at 50fps in full 360, which means you point it once and pull whatever angle you actually wanted after the fact instead of framing a shot in the moment. Behind that is a pair of custom Sony 1/1.1-inch sensors that Insta360 says take in roughly four times the light per frame compared to the X5, paired with a triple AI chip setup delivering 500 percent more compute than last year's model.

The camera also switches into two other shooting modes on demand. InstaFrame 2.0 locks onto a subject and outputs flat 4K video with automatic tracking, no editing required, and pairing it with the new Foldable Selfie Stick Remote Kit adds joystick control for gimbal-style framing without an actual gimbal. Flip to single-lens mode and X6 behaves like a standard action camera, shooting up to 5K60fps or 4K120fps for slow motion.

Why It Matters

Insta360

The 3-in-1 framing matters more than any individual spec bump. A 360 camera, a subject-tracking gimbal, and an action cam have historically been three different purchases with three different form factors, and consolidating them into one body that switches modes with a tap is a genuinely different value proposition than “this year's sensor is bigger.”

The AI editing claims are the part worth treating carefully until real footage backs them up. Insta360 says its PanoMind model, trained on more than 10,000 hours of footage, can build a finished highlight edit on the camera itself while it charges, no cloud processing, no timeline. That's a strong claim, and it's paired with a separate cloud tool called Moments Pro, built with Google Gemini, for people who want to describe an edit rather than let the camera build one automatically. The on-device privacy pitch and the cloud AI feature are aimed at different use cases, but it's worth being clear in any hands-on that they're not the same system.

Key Details

X6 is rated for native in-camera Dolby Vision, a first for a 360 camera, along with 10-bit color and a claimed 1.07 billion recordable colors. Battery life comes from a new 2600mAh cell rated for 140 minutes of 8K30fps 360 recording, 51 percent longer than the X5, with fast charging to 80 percent in 24 minutes.

The accessory ecosystem is substantial: more than 100 accessories at launch, all backward compatible with X5, X4 Air, and Ace series mounts. That includes a dedicated motorcycle set with a speed dashboard overlay and automatic license plate blurring, plus a dive case rated to 60 meters. Audio gets a four-mic windproof array plus a separate mic tuned specifically to isolate engine noise for riders.

The Takeaway

X6 starts at $699.99 for the Standard Bundle, with an Essentials Bundle at $799.99, both available today from Insta360's store, Amazon, and select retailers. Anyone buying and activating before September 30 gets a year of 500GB cloud storage plus three months of Moments Pro. The camera itself looks like a real jump on paper, but the mode-switching versatility and the on-camera AI editing are the two claims that actually need testing before they're worth recommending over a dedicated action cam or gimbal setup.

With over a decade's experience covering the world of Android and having reviewed more devices than he can count, Peter is excited about where the world of tech is heading. He is currently packing the Oppo Find X9 Pro.
