  4. How many years did Sen. Graham serve in Congress?

ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS

  • How should a political leader's legacy be evaluated? What do you think is the most important aspect of Graham's legacy based on the segment you just watched?
  • What factors can influence a politician to change their positions or political alliances over time?

Media literacy: When public figures pass away, news organizations often publish stories that summarize their careers and influence. Do you think this segment might have left out any important details about Graham's life and legacy? If so, what? And why do you think it was left out?

WHAT STUDENTS CAN DO

Every political leader leaves behind a complex legacy shaped by their accomplishments, decisions, leadership, and public perception. Choose Lindsey Graham or another current or former political figure and research their career. Then, write a balanced summary of their legacy.

Your profile should include:

  • Background: Who is this political leader? What offices did they hold and during what time period did they serve?
  • Major Accomplishments: Describe significant legislation, policies or initiatives they helped create or support.
  • Leadership Roles: Explain any important leadership positions they held in government, political parties or committees.
  • Challenges and Controversies: Discuss major criticisms, policy disagreements or controversial moments during their career. Be sure to explain multiple perspectives using reliable sources.
  • Historical Impact: How did this leader influence American politics, public policy or government? Has their work had a lasting impact?

Based on your research, write a short paragraph evaluating their legacy. What do you think future generations are most likely to remember about this individual, and why?
