Organizations see $13.4 million in annual benefits and 517% ROI from AI-powered search

There are 11 enterprise Elastic customers across financial services, healthcare, retail, and government that have reduced time to minimum viable AI products 40% faster than before. What’s their secret? They leverage the Elasticsearch Platform as their search and retrieval foundation.

The Elasticsearch Platform doesn't just accelerate AI product delivery; it transforms what's possible when search, retrieval, and AI infrastructure start working cohesively. By unifying vector search, hybrid search, Jina AI models, and your context layer on a single integrated stack, your organization can unlock business impact that compounds across revenue, productivity, and operational resilience. To quantify what a stronger retrieval foundation delivers in terms of business value, Elastic commissioned IDC to interview these 11 large enterprises.

Unlocking millions in business impact with Elasticsearch

IDC conducted an independent business value study with organizations across several industries. These enterprises had an average of 36,521 employees, $15 billion in annual revenue, and 56 AI-driven search and generative AI (GenAI) products, services, and use cases in production.

Across revenue gains, productivity improvements, IT efficiencies, and operational resilience, IDC calculated a three-year discounted benefit of $31.2 million per organization against $5.06 million in investment costs. This is a 517% ROI with an 11-month payback.

Key study results

IDC's analysis found that organizations using the Elasticsearch Platform realize $241,600 in annual benefits per AI-driven search or GenAI use case or $13.43 million per organization. Key metrics mapped to the IDC framework include:

  • 517% three-year ROI with an average payback period of just 11 months

  • $13.4 million in annual benefits per organization, driven largely by higher net revenue

  • 40% reduction in time to minimum viable AI product (nearly eight weeks faster from concept to production compared to the previous state)

  • 35% faster AI product updates, enabling rapid iteration on live use cases

  • 44% improvement in search relevance meaning more users get dependable answers on the first attempt

  • 27% higher development team productivity enabling teams to build, modify, and deploy use cases more effectively

  • 150 hours per year gained per employee from faster, more accurate internal search across enterprise workflows

With the Elasticsearch Platform, we can grow our business however we want without worrying about whether our search stack will scale smoothly. Our AI business is growing, and we can grow at whatever pace we choose, serving more regions and more international customers.

Faster time to market for AI products

Study participants consistently described the Elasticsearch Platform as the foundation for their AI ambitions, not a bolted-on product. By combining keyword, semantic, vector, and hybrid search and their context layer with integrated retrieval augmented generation (RAG) capabilities, organizations were able to move AI use cases out of experimentation and into production faster than with fragmented tooling. The use cases included:

  • AI-powered sales content retrieval

  • Customer service chatbots

  • Fraud and anomaly detection

  • Underwriting decision support

  • Agentic workflows for complex, multistep tasks

Across all of them, the speed of moving from idea to impact was a defining result.

The Elasticsearch Platform is a big part of moving into agentic AI. We're grounding responses in accurate indexed data and improving the quality of generative responses without relying solely on generative reasoning.

Turn context into a growth lever

Organizations that deployed the Elasticsearch Platform reported consistent improvements in search quality, response times, and the ability to retrieve accurate contextual information. This IDC study demonstrates that the Elasticsearch Platform delivers measurable, compounding value and a foundation for AI-driven business growth.
