What is the largest source of electricity in each country? Australia is replacing coal and gas power with solar and wind Less than 60% of the world has access to safe sanitation Lung cancer deaths trace the rise and fall of smoking Most collected waste in many low- and middle-income countries is stored in open dumps or is burned Coffee production has shifted toward Asia over the last six decades One in four cars sold in 2025 was electric One in four cars sold in 2025 was electric Global sales of combustion engine cars peaked in 2017 Global sales of combustion engine cars peaked in 2017 Tajikistan's remittances are worth nearly half the country’s GDP China added a Germany-sized electricity grid last year Japan closed nearly all of its nuclear plants after Fukushima, but some are coming back online Cereal yields in Ghana have increased much faster over the past decade Global biofuel production has grown sevenfold in the last 20 years, despite the rise of electric cars More than a million people die from road injuries every year Low-carbon electricity sources grew faster than demand in 2025, pushing fossil fuels into decline India went from 15% to 70% Internet access in a decade, mostly through mobile phones Teenage pregnancy rates have fallen across the world What is the most unequal country in South America? It depends on what metric you look at The global number of people without electricity has halved since 2000, but it has increased in Sub-Saharan Africa Which countries have fertility rates above or below the “replacement level”? Indoor air pollution causes almost three million premature deaths every year Death rates for cervical cancer in the United Kingdom have fallen by 80% since 1950 France’s nuclear fleet gives it one of the world’s lowest-carbon electricity grids Hunger levels have increased across Africa over the last decade Many countries are “leapfrogging” landlines and going straight to mobile phones The global suicide rate has fallen since the 1990s, but the death toll is still high Brazil, India, Vietnam, and Russia hold large reserves of rare earth, but mine very little of them China’s Great Leap Forward caused a dramatic spike in child deaths Estimates suggest that 45% of abortions globally are unsafe — but this varies widely across regions Mental health care is scarce everywhere — but in poor countries, it barely exists Outside rich countries, widespread informal work means unemployment rates are low Coal power has effectively died in the United Kingdom Until fifty years ago, Argentina was richer than Spain In the 1980s, youth literacy was higher in Sub-Saharan Africa than in South Asia; it’s now the opposite Argentina was one of the richest countries in the world at the beginning of the 20th century The median age in China has rapidly caught up with the United Kingdom Smoking has already killed far more people this century than in the entire 20th century The world has made huge progress in reducing extreme poverty; could this be coming to an end? In 2025, solar and wind produced more electricity than fossil fuels in the European Union Women in Spain, Italy, and Portugal marry on average six years later than just two decades ago A record number of objects went into space in 2025 Oil spills from tankers have fallen by more than 90% since the 1970s Deforestation is no longer inevitable
The world gets more seafood from aquaculture than wild catch
Hannah Ritchie, Pablo Arriagada · 2026-03-28 · via Our World in Data - Data Insights
Line chart of global seafood production from 1960 to 2022 comparing aquaculture and capture fisheries where aquaculture rises from near zero in the 1960s, accelerates from the 1990s, and overtakes capture fisheries around 2010. Capture fisheries grow earlier then level off, while aquaculture becomes the larger source of seafood by 2022. The data source is the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations via the World Bank (2026). The chart is licensed CC BY to Our World in Data.

There are two ways to produce seafood: catch fish in the wild or farm your own. Seafood farming is often called “aquaculture”. Aquaculture is dominated by the farming of fish, but also includes other organisms, such as crustaceans and aquatic plants.

Aquaculture has grown rapidly over the last few decades. In fact, as the chart shows, it has overtaken wild catch since 2013.

This has relieved some pressure on wild fish stocks: if this increased demand for fish had been satisfied by wild catch, then many more would be severely overexploited.
