Unitree humanoid robot executes skating, flips and spins

China’s Unitree Robotics has showcased a customized G1 humanoid robot capable of hybrid movement, combining wheeled motion with gliding on roller and ice skates through coordinated wheel-leg control.

In footage released Thursday, the G1 performs continuous, coordinated movements including dancing, 360-degree turns, one-leg spins and front flips while maintaining balance and posture.

Unitree said humanoid robots are suited for general-purpose applications, noting they can operate without wheels but can also incorporate them when beneficial, depending on task requirements.

The demonstration highlights improvements in stability, real-time control and hybrid mobility, areas that have historically constrained humanoid robots. By combining wheeled efficiency with legged adaptability, the system can handle varied terrain and motion demands more effectively than conventional designs, according to Pan Daily.

Experts say the approach reflects a broader industry shift. Earlier balancing machines relied primarily on wheels, while more recent humanoid systems have emphasized human-like limbs.

Unitree’s design merges both approaches, supported by advances in simulation training and AI-driven motion control, TechRadar reported.

The company has previously introduced another wheeled model, the G1-D, which replaces bipedal movement with a wheel-based platform.

It is designed for data collection, AI training and real-world task execution, integrating hardware and software into a full-stack system for managing AI workflows, according to Interesting Engineering.
