Three projects have been awarded funding in the first joint call between WASP and WASP-HS that closed June 17, 2026. The call invited researchers to initiate collaborations spanning AI, autonomous systems, software, and humanities and social sciences. The call received 18 applications, of which the following three were approved:

One of the grant recipients, Sara Hamis, Assistant Professor at Department of Information Technology at Uppsala University explains their project:
“I’m fascinated by uncertainty, and a core theme of my WASP research group is to develop methods to mathematically quantify uncertainty in AI models. But when it comes to making decisions under that uncertainty in high-stakes contexts like healthcare, the maths is only part of the equation — the human and societal part is another. That’s why we’re teaming up with WASP-HS researchers Nicolette Lakemond and Gunnar Holmberg. Together, we will investigate how medical uncertainty is acted on by patients, clinicians, and epidemiologists. Does it matter if that uncertainty is communicated by AI or a human?”
The call aims to strengthen collaboration between WASP and WASP-HS, build meaningful interdisciplinary partnerships, and bridge the scientific fields represented in the two programs. It also gives researchers from both programs an opportunity to initiate and pursue joint research projects. The call generated a variaty of highly interesting project ideas and it is the intention of both programs to continue supporting such collaboration. WASP and WASP-HS have already organized a joint workshop and are planning further collaborations.
WASP is funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation (KAW) and WASP-HS is funded by the Marianne and Marcus Wallenberg Foundation (MMW) and Marcus and Amalia Wallenberg Foundation (MAW).
