NIST Updates 5G Open-Source Testbed Tools
Doug Montgomery · 2026-09-04 · via News and Events Feed by Topic

Support for OCUDU and Duranta OSS platforms as well as multi-cell ZeroMQ channel emulation.

  • NIST 5G Testbed Automation Tools enable wireless researchers to easily deploy the latest releases of widely used open-source implementations of 5G / O-RAN technologies.
  • The new release supports the latest releases of the OCUDU and Duranta open-source RAN software.
  • The new NIST developed GNU Radio-based channel emulator that uses ZeroMQ to enable multi-cell, multi-UE testbed topologies with individual configurable channel emulation properties. The emulator enables reproducible software-based 5G channel experiments without specialized radio hardware.

The latest release of the NIST 5G Open-Source Testbed Automation tool includes a new GNU Radio-based channel emulator that uses ZeroMQ to connect multiple cells and multiple UEs. Researchers can adjust signal paths with configurable attenuation and additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). A common radio profile aligns the parameters required for I/Q exchange across diverse software stacks. The emulator enables reproducible software-based 5G channel experiments without specialized radio hardware.
