Technologies and Use Cases for Smart Standards

The rapid development and deployment of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, blockchain, and the internet of things is driving an increased need for standards that can keep pace with the accelerating rate of technological change. As a result, the scope of standards development has expanded to encompass a broader range of applications, including cross-domain standards for information technology, and to include technologies with higher levels of uncertainty. The traditional standards development process is being challenged by the need for faster development and deployment cycles to keep up with the rapid pace of technological innovation.

To support this evolution, the standards development process needs to change as well. New technologies such as artificial intelligence, model-based standards, and ontologies are being explored to facilitate standards development. At the same time, more fundamental changes in the philosophy of standards development are being considered to reduce siloing, ensure that standards meet requirements, and prevent premature standardization.

The purpose of this workshop is to bring together individuals from the standards development and technology infrastructure communities who are experimenting with these technologies or have an understanding of the new requirements necessary for standards in the post-AI world. We would like to identify the underlying requirements for a collective, integrated approach to standards development that spans text, algorithms, time, and geography. The workshop will feature keynote presentations on the current and future directions of AI technologies for standards, the standards development process, and other technologies that may be applied to standards. It will also include working groups and discussions to develop roadmaps and strategies for adapting standards and standards development technologies.
