Superyachts have become synonymous with excess—and emissions. Studies have found that a single large private yacht can emit more than 5,000 metric tons of CO₂ each year, giving it a carbon footprint that dwarfs that of the average person. So when a pair of potential owners tell you they want to build a superyacht that gets rid of fossil fuels altogether, what could a shipyard possibly say?
For most, the answer was no. The technology wasn't ready; the compromises would be too great; diesel engines would always be the default.
But this month, after almost a decade of development, Zero has finally entered the water in Harlingen, the Netherlands.
The world’s first all-electric sailing superyacht, Zero brought together Vripack, Dykstra Naval Architects, physicists, America's Cup engineers and a pair of owners who refused to abandon an idea simply because nobody had done it before.

"I was struck by the industry’s lack of curiosity [regarding Zero]," Bart Bouwhuis, Vripack’s co-creative director, tells me. “It wasn't just seen as unrealistic; it was largely dismissed outright, without serious investigation.”
It was that willingness to experiment that got Vripack the job. "We were invited to meet with the owners, who outlined their vision," Vripack’s other co-creative director, Marnix J. Hoekstra, explains. “We responded honestly. We didn’t know if it could be achieved, but we were confident that by following our design and research process, we'd find the right answer.”
Even so, there were moments when Zero appeared to be asking too much. The owners wanted to spend up to 14 days sailing “in comfort”, with every onboard system running solely on renewable energy. Early calculations were deflating.

"Our analysis, based on existing data and testing on other vessels, indicated that we could only achieve around two days," Hoekstra says. "The 14-day target appeared unrealistic for a significant period."
Instead of lowering their expectations, the owners expanded the team—bringing on physicists alongside naval architects and engineers—with this all-new "think-tank" the tipping point for Zero’s success, according to Vripack.
Zero has no conventional engine. Regenerative systems—including specially developed turbine propellers—produce electricity while sailing, while 100 square meters of solar panels built into the Biminis generate both electrical power and heat. Everything is managed through a central energy system designed to balance generation and consumption without relying on fossil fuels.
According to Vripack’s simulations, the final profile delivers a 2.5% increase in sailing speed, translating into roughly eight percent more electrical power generation.
It’s a lot of hefty tech, but Zero is, above all else, a beautiful yacht. Long overhangs, low-slung decks and twin masts carry the charm of a classic sailer, with custom touches including matte-finished decks, a hand-painted metal transom and interiors designed with the natural world in mind.
Living spaces are replete with smoked European oak, purposefully unfinished to show all its natural knots and grain. Stone surfaces show visible cut lines; furniture incorporates reclaimed tree bark. The effect is warm, earthy but also sustainably minded, increasing the yield from each oak veneer to around 70%, compared with roughly 30% in a conventional build.

Vripack visited the owners’ homes before drawing the interiors—studying how they lived before deciding how they would live at sea. Another unexpectedly practical request was how the pair wanted to dine onboard.
"The dining area on their previous yacht took a lot of time for the crew to set up," Hoekstra says.
The solution was modular outdoor furniture mounted on lockable casters, allowing the owners to reconfigure the cockpit themselves for four, eight or 12 guests. Electric cockpit windows can also be closed at the push of a button if the weather changes, without calling the crew.
Elsewhere, a dining table converts into a puzzle and craft table, while the owner’s suite wraps around the mizzen mast and connects directly to a private study designed for working remotely during extended voyages.

Despite embracing AI-assisted design throughout the project, Bouwhuis insists yacht design remains a deeply personal endeavour.
"We do not see this as a division between AI and human design," he says. "We see it as a collaboration."
Artificial intelligence helped the team explore more options and spend longer refining ideas with the owners. But some decisions, he says, still rely on lived experience.
"A full radius corner that simply feels right under the hand. A puzzle drawer built into a step, solving a problem the owner didn’t even know they had until they see it," he says. "AI cannot yet imagine what it means to wake up at sea and want to feel a certain way."
Hoekstra believes Zero’s biggest contribution will come long after she is delivered to her owners.
“The superyacht sector can be slow to embrace new approaches, particularly on the technological side,” he says. "But over a 10- to 20-year horizon, it is entirely realistic that many of Zero’s principles will become standard."
And more than any individual piece of technology, he hopes designers adopt the process that created her.
“The owners entrusted us with a lot of freedom and respect for the choices we made,” he explains. “The result is a beautiful and capable yacht designed as a single continuous object—not a collection of parts.”
For nearly a decade, Zero existed as an idea that much of the yachting industry thought unrealistic. Now, the only question is: How long until the next one?
