The Kozhikode based Universal Karmic Foundation, a public charitable organization working in the field of environmental conservation and social responsibility, has announced Hackathon on ocean plastic and oil elimination mission. The initiative is aimed at addressing marine pollution, including plastic waste, micro-plastics, nano-plastics, and oil residues in oceans, rivers, and coastal waters.
The Hackathon will be held in in January and the Foundation has invited children, students, engineering graduates, IIT students, researchers, start-ups, and manufacturers to design and develop innovative machines capable of removing plastic waste, oil-like substances, micro-plastics, and floating debris from seas and rivers. The proposed machines are expected to operate using renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and water, and to be adaptable for use on small fishing boats as well as larger vessels.
The Hackathon is conceived as a mission-oriented programme rather than a competition, with the objective of identifying practical, scalable, and eco-friendly solutions that can be implemented in real-world conditions. Selected designs and prototypes will be further evaluated for field trials and future deployment in coastal and riverine areas.
The success of the Ocean Cleanup Mission depends on collective effort and cooperation across society, and called upon citizens, institutions, and innovators to participate in protecting marine ecosystems for future generations, said a press release.
Over the past several years, the Foundation has been actively involved in environmental protection programmes, awareness campaigns, and community-based initiatives focused on ocean and river conservation. Working closely with fishermen, students, engineers, volunteers, and local communities, the Foundation has promoted sustainable practices and practical solutions to reduce plastic pollution entering water bodies. Special emphasis has been given to encouraging public participation and recognizing selfless service through technology-driven platforms.
