The European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems (ELLIS) announced in May the addition of seven new units, including one in Sweden. ELLIS is a pan-European AI network that brings together leading researchers, with a particular strength in machine learning. The new Swedish unit gathers top researchers from across the country. Many of them are affiliated with WASP, highlighting WASP’s growing impact on Sweden’s AI research landscape.

A national effort

The Swedish ELLIS Unit is the result of strong collaboration between several of the country’s top universities and research environments. The application for the Swedish ELLIS unit was developed with significant contributions from researchers affiliated with WASP and WASP-HS.

“WASP has over the past years built a critical mass of expertise in AI, autonomous systems and software, playing a key role in strengthening Sweden’s position in these fields. The creation of the Swedish ELLIS Unit demonstrates how long-term national investment can translate into strong international collaboration,” says Amy Loutfi, WASP program director.

The Swedish ELLIS Unit will be coordinated by KTH Royal Institute of Technology, in close collaboration with Chalmers University of Technology, Linköping University, and Uppsala University. Together, these universities form the initial core of the unit, with the ambition to include additional partners over time.

Strong connection to the wider ELLIS network

The Swedish unit is designed to function as a national hub, enabling high level collaboration between Swedish researchers and the broader ELLIS network. This includes joint research projects, talent exchange, and the development of long-term research in key areas of AI.

ELLIS Units play a foundational role in building a strong and competitive European AI research ecosystem within the ELLIS network.By concentrating expertise and fostering collaboration, the network aims to strengthen both scientific quality and international competitiveness.

Strengthening Sweden’s international position in AI

By joining the network, Sweden gains access to a broad platform of leading researchers, institutions, and initiatives across Europe.

At the same time, Sweden contributes a well-established and highly collaborative national research environment, much of it shaped by WASP. The new unit is expected to enhance visibility for Swedish AI research and create new opportunities for collaborative projects, funding, and talent recruitment.
