WASP is strengthening its research environment through the recruitment of Julian Togelius, Professor of Computer Science at New York University and one of the world’s leading researchers in artificial intelligence and games. Togelius will join Chalmers University of Technology.

The recruitment is part of a major strategic initiative supported by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation, in which leading international researchers are recruited to Swedish universities to further strengthen research environments of long-term importance for Sweden.

Julian Togelius, Professor of Computer Science at New York University, is recruited to Chalmers University of Technology. The recruitment amounts to SEK 80 million, where the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation contributes SEK 50 million and Chalmers SEK 30 million.

Julian Togelius is internationally recognized for his research on AI and games, including procedural content generation, player modelling, automatic game design, reinforcement learning and open-ended learning. His research explores how games can be used both as a testbed for artificial intelligence and to develop AI systems that support human creativity.

The recruitment package will enable Togelius to build a new research group in Sweden with both junior and senior researchers. This contributes to WASP’s long-term ambition to attract and retain international research talent and to create strong research environments across Sweden.

Julian Togelius will join Chalmers at the end of the year. Until then, he will continue in his role as Professor at New York University.
