Apple iPhone 17 Pro: what will the iPhone Fold look like, and when will it go on sale?

Apple will release its first folding iPhone this year, it’s believed. But while it looks overwhelmingly likely that the iPhone 18 Pro will land in Apple’s customary September launch spot, there’s more of a question mark hanging over the folding handset.

The iPhone Fold — it could be called the iPhone Ultra instead — has already seen numerous rumors relating to when it will appear.

Conflicting Reports On The Foldable iPhone Timeline

In late March, Mark Gurman insisted that it would be late, saying, “There’s no doubt that this is going to come a little bit later than the pro phones,” in an online conversation for Bloomberg.

Then there was a report by the Nikkei which said there would be a delay. When this was interpreted by some to mean it wouldn’t arrive until 2027, it was followed by an Apple stock slide.

The next comment came from Gurman again, who referred to the Nikkei report’s aftershocks. “Mostly based on that rumor, Apple stock slid more than 5% on Tuesday… The good news for both investors (and people like me who cannot wait to get the foldable iPhone): The fears are overblown,” Gurman reported.

He added that Apple was “on track to announce the device in the first half of September… Better yet, while supply could be limited the plan as of now is to start selling the foldable iPhone as the new Pro models or very soon thereafter,” he explained.

Production Delays And Supply Chain Concerns

The good news didn’t have the spotlight to itself for long, however, with a report from DigiTimes striking a slightly (but only slightly) gloomier note. In an article headlined: “Exclusive: Apple's foldable iPhone faces production delay, but 2026 launch still in sight,” it suggested that production has been pushed back.

Where mass production had been expected to begin in June, that may now have moved to early August — not long before its launch announcement or onsale date, both expected to be in September.

However, the supply chains DigiTimes refers to also emphasized that “a tighter and more compressed production schedule,” as it described it, means Apple is still aiming for a 2026 release.

Personally, I believe Apple will make that production schedule work. It’s not the first time reports have suggested a product will be heavily delayed, only for it to appear just days late, or even on time.
