A surge of bug reports and feature requests right after a new product or feature launch doesn’t always mean the release failed. But it can signal that the development team missed something important during planning, user acceptance testing or prelaunch validation.

Before a product reaches users, dev teams need to understand not only whether it works but also whether it fits real customer needs, workflows and expectations. Below, members of Forbes Technology Council discuss some of the common reasons dev teams receive a steady stream of bug reports and feature requests shortly after a new product or feature release as well as tips to avoid these costly planning and testing missteps.

Prioritize Bugs By Customer Journey

I see this often. The developers are most likely not using weighted defect counts to understand their product bug priorities prior to release. Also, fixing bugs before release requires a certain knowledge base, since fixes can cause other bugs to surface. After 40 years of such work, you know. The devs probably did not test in real-life situations. When testing does not reflect how users really behave, problems with certain situations and ease of use go unnoticed. Anticipate User Friction Points

The devs most likely skipped “complaint rehearsal.” Before launch, every team should map the top 10 ways users will get confused, annoyed or stuck, then test those moments on real humans. The development team likely rushed quality in favor of speed to market, which is not ideal. Developing high-quality, customer-centric products requires partnership with customers from idea inception to launch, with quality as the top priority. Use Requirements Gathering For Discovery

The devs likely treated requirements gathering as documentation instead of discovery. When teams collect requirements through sign-offs and wish lists without observing real workflows, they build on assumptions. The team likely didn’t fully test how the new release interacts with existing systems and workflows. Features may have worked in isolation, but once deployed, they introduced friction or broke dependencies. I’ve seen this happen when teams validate the feature, but not the context around it. The product works as designed, but it doesn’t fit cleanly into how users actually operate day to day. The likely miss is insufficient collaboration during planning. The dev, QA and business teams weren’t fully aligned on requirements, usability and expected outcomes. Use Phased Beta And Canary Releases

The team skipped canary releases and didn’t identify alpha/beta customers before full rollout. Real-world usage patterns are impossible to simulate in UAT—you need production traffic on a controlled population first. A structured beta group surfaces edge cases, stress tests the system under real load, and gives you a feedback loop before you’re fielding reports from everyone. Run UAT With Independent QA And Third-Party Pilots

This is very common. In my experience the typical scenario is that the team ran a scripted, by-the-numbers UAT. I’d be willing to bet that a large percentage of the bug reports are edge cases and functional gaps. It’s also usually a symptom of not having a pilot run with a third party. Test Power User Scenarios

It’s very possible that testing was not done with any scenarios based on power users—the people who have lots of account history, with lots of data in use across the product. Oftentimes, testing is done with fresh accounts and the minimum amount of data needed for testing a feature.
