The next big iPhone software change will be iOS 27 (though more updates are coming to iOS 26, with one perhaps in a matter of days). The new software will be unveiled in just over two weeks, on Monday, June 8 at the WWDC 2026 keynote.
The latest rumors suggest that four iPhones won’t be invited to the iOS 27 party. Each year, on the day of the keynote, Apple reveals which phones have made the cut. Some years, there have been no iPhones dropped from compatibility at all. In 2024, all phones running iOS 17 went on to run iOS 18 as well.
Last fall, three iPhones ceased to receive iOS 26 support, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max and iPhone XR.
The latest reports suggest that there will be more phones dropping off the list when it’s announced.
“iOS 27 will require an iPhone 12 or later. And while iOS 26 supported the second-gen iPhone SE, the new update will only run on iPhone SE 3 or later,” 9to5Macreported.

In other words, four iPhones will be unable to upgrade to iOS 27, iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone 11 Pro Max and iPhone SE 2nd generation.
Note also, many of the enhancements this time around are expected to focus on Apple Intelligence, which is only available for models from the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max onwards — and not the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus. They’ve never had Apple Intelligence.
Just because iOS 27 isn’t available to the iPhone 11 series, for instance, doesn’t mean the phone will stop working. It’ll carry on exactly as it is today, running iOS 26.
There will also continue to be updates to iOS 26 for some time, though only for bug fixes and security patches.
