WhatsApp Warns iPhone And Android Users: AI Chats Not ‘Tr...

“Most AI chats keep a record of what you ask them,” WhatsApp warns, “and all your prompts add up.” The secure messenger has just launched Incognito Chat, which it assures iPhone and Android users will keep all their AI questions and answers “truly private."

Not even WhatsApp or Meta will be able to see what you ask, WhatsApp says in a PR pitch that includes a video built on the premise that no one needs to know “what’s keeping you up at night.”

WhatsApp rightly points out that “ten years ago we brought the world end-to-end encryption." They were not the first to fully encrypt messages, Apple got there earlier, but WhatsApp popularized it. “Now we are extending this privacy to chats with Meta AI,” the messenger says.

There’s a clear irony here — WhatsApp and Meta make for uneasy bedfellows. One pushes privacy while the other is a digital advertising behemoth built on user data. But that contradiction is not new. It has persisted ever since Facebook acquired WhatsApp in 2014.

“Other apps have introduced incognito-style modes,” WhatsApp says, but they can still see the questions coming in and the answers going out. Incognito Chat with Meta AI is truly private — "no one can read your conversation, not even us."

The primary target for this campaign is not ChatGPT or Claude or even Copilot— it’s Gemini. Google’s AI engine is now stitched through the Android ecosystem and a wide range of other platforms and services. Google’s Gmail, Photos, Drive, Calendar all now bake AI into their core offering. And the new Personalized Intelligence update collates data across the lot.

All this will come to the fore when Apple eventually sorts out its own AI strategy and catches iPhone up with other platforms. Its hybrid approach will likely let users decide what AI engine to use, albeit the assumption remains that Apple’s Private Cloud Compute will deliver a similar level of privacy.

WhatsApp’s Private Processing was designed to "deliver helpful capabilities, such as summarizing messages, without Meta or WhatsApp having access to them.” As I’ve pointed out for some time, creating such personal cloud enclaves for AI processing will become the next dividing line.

Incognito Chat with Meta AI hits phones "over the coming months."
