The Devil Wears Prada

20th Century FOX

Just because you don’t feel that old and the cast of The Devil Wears Prada 2 appears to be ageless, that doesn’t change the reality that The Devil Wears Prada 2 has been released a full 20 years after the original film in 2006. My brain cannot quite wrap itself around that.

I just saw The Devil Wears Prada 2, and while the movie does explain at least small portions of the original story, it’s certainly not all of it, and it’s also full of in-jokes and references to the first film that you may have forgotten in two decades, which would be understandable. As such, you may want to watch the original before you head out for the sequel. Depending on your streaming service, maybe you already can. The Devil Wears Prada is streaming on:

If you don’t want any of those and do not feel like subscribing to an entire subscription service just to watch it, you can rent the movie on Amazon Prime Video for $4 right now, or you can just buy it outright for $5, part of a special deal that has accompanied the release of the new film.

It really is wild to think back this far now. Both Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt were 23 when that movie came out. Hathaway was barely out of her Princess Diaries years, and this is one of Blunt’s earliest big roles before she broke out and became the star she is today. Meryl Streep was 57 and Stanley Tucci was 45. Again, this cast looks more like they’ve aged 5 years than 20 if you go see The Devil Wears Prada 2.

Current box office estimates put The Devil Wears Prada 2 as likely earning $75 to $80 million domestically in its opening weekend, and $180 million worldwide. The production budget has certainly ballooned since 2006, both in terms of inflation and cast salaries, but at most, it’s $100 million, which it will pass easily in its first 3.5 days of release here.

Will we return to The Devil Wears Prada in another 20 years for a third movie? I’m not sure a 97-year-old Meryl Streep would be on board, but I’d certainly be curious what 63-year-old Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt would be up to. Oh god, I just thought about how old I’ll be in 20 years, this was a mistake.
