Hong Kong-based GL.iNet, a maker of OpenWrt-based networking and remote access products, has just launched its Slate 7 Pro, or GL-BE10000 if you want the official product number. It’s an upgraded version of the company’s Slate 7 GL-BE3600 travel router and the first of its kind to offer tri-band Wi-Fi aggregation and wireless speeds up to blazing 10Gbps, the kind of speed usually reserved for full-size wireless routers.
But before we discuss all that’s new about the Slate 7 Pro, we should ask why you would want a travel router. The clue is in the name. When we travel, we often have to rely on public Wi-Fi hotspots in cafes or hotels. These can be insecure and present easy prey for hackers. If all you’re doing is browsing Facebook or uploading a few photos to Instagram, it’s no big deal. But if you’re using a laptop or phone with sensitive company or personal data on it, it’s not worth the risk.
Travel routers are great for families on holiday in an Airbnb where everyone can connect their phone, tablet or Nintendo Switch to the Internet, either using an Ethernet connection or a 5G modem dongle. The Slate 7 Pro supports simultaneous tri-band operation across the 2.4GHz, 5GHz and 6GHz Wi-Fi bands, resulting in high wireless speeds and low-latency in a range of networking situations. The router also has 2.5Gbps WAN and LAN ports, plus a USB 3.0 port for data, storage or a 5G modem, as well as a USB-C port for power input.
The compact router includes Multi-Link Operation, enhanced OFDMA, 4KQAM and preamble puncturing for faster response times. These advanced technologies ensure the router maintains a high data throughput and more stable performance, even when in a congested network. GL.iNet says the result is “smooth and reliable connections for work, streaming and real-time applications.”
The Slate 7 Pro router has two foldable antennas and includes WAN and LAN ports with 2.5Gbps speeds.

There are not many physical controls on the Slate 7 Pro. Instead, most of the features and settings are accessed using the device’s 2.8-inch touchscreen, which takes up most of the top surface of the router. The touchscreen makes network management simpler and setting up the router more intuitive.
Thanks to the color touchscreen, there’s no need to use a smartphone or laptop to set up Wi-Fi or make changes. Users just need to tap the screen to monitor connection status in real time, switch VPN profiles, share Wi-Fi via a QR code and complete basic network configuration tasks.
The Slate 7 Pro is powered by a MediaTek quad-core CPU running at 2Ghz and delivering faster VPN throughput and enhanced multitasking capabilities. With full support for WireGuard and OpenVPN (DCO support) on board, the router can achieve up to 1100 Mbps and 1000 Mbps, respectively.
Whether it’s used to access a home lab remotely, transfer large files, or secure a local network, the result is more responsive VPN performance with minimal latency.
At the rear of the Slate 7 Pro are the WAN and LAN Ethernet ports as well as a USB-C power input and an OTG USB 3 port for storage or an external modem.
