God of War Laufey is coming. That's what we know for sure, but when? That's what we don't know.

God of War is my favorite single-player action-adventure series. There's never been a bad version and the last one, God of War: Ragnarok was so amazing, I experienced everything from jump scares, thrills, curiosity, frustration and tears as I hacked and slashed my way through the world Sony Santa Monica beautifully crafted.

With Laufey revealed during Tuesday's Sony State of Play, the buzz is at a fever pitch even without a definitive release date.

When Does God Of War Laufey Release?

According to details during the 20-minute reveal, God of War Laufey is simply "coming to PS5." That's it. It's a heck of a cliffhanger, but the extended gameplay video gives hope that the release is sooner rather than later. However, with the release of Grand Theft Auto 6 looming in November, it feels like this one could be pushed back to 2027.

PS5 is the only platform Sony has confirmed. There has been no mention of PC, no mention of PS4 backward support, and no release window — only that the game is available to wishlist on the PlayStation Store now.

That cuts both ways. Twenty minutes of polished gameplay usually points to a release inside 12 months, but Sony tends to wait until it has a date worth marketing before locking one in publicly.

What Is The Story Of God Of War Laufey?

Faye is the new protagonist and Laufey begins in Everywhen. It's unclear if the entire story takes place there. However, it appears she will have heavy-duty adversaries and the world could be visually amazing. I do wonder if there will be any issues with people of certain faiths taking offense to the portrayal of their deities.

Cory Barlog confirmed in a post-reveal interview that this is not a prequel. The game picks up directly after Faye's funeral at the start of 2018's God of War, with Faye waking up in the Everywhen — described as the afterlife of the gods, where deities from multiple mythologies fight for power.

The driving conflict is that the plans Faye put in place to protect Kratos and Atreus are now at risk. She has to fight through the Everywhen to save what she built, which gives Santa Monica room to finally show players the strategist behind the entire Norse saga.

How Does Laufey's Combat Differ From Kratos?

While Kratos' battle style was more built on brutality and explosiveness, Faye's seems to be more whimsically brutal, with speed and magic playing a major role.

Game director Ariel Lawrence and Barlog have framed it as a deliberate contrast. Kratos was the stoic brick wall; Faye is built around speed, fluidity and high mobility, with double jumps, juggle combos and aerial strings that recall the Greek-era games more than the modern Norse duology.

Her primary weapon is a legendary sword. The headline mechanic is soul-based: in the Everywhen, Faye can separate an enemy's soul from its body, then attack the soul directly, knock it into other enemies or weaponize it for combos. That's the system the gameplay reveal spent the most time showing off, and it's clearly the design hook.

Who Are The New Characters In God Of War Laufey?

We learned Faye will be played by Deborah Ann Woll, the same actress that was used for the character during Ragnarok flashbacks.

Jack Quaid voices Phranque. You might know him as the star of The Boys. Perlina Lau voices Rue, a new character to the series. Lau has had mostly smaller roles, but most recently, you might have seen her in Creamerie. Sekhmet, an Egyptian lioness goddess and Begtse, a Mongolian war deity, plus a six-legged cat that can fly are all enemies Faye will encounter.

Phranque was the breakout of the reveal for a lot of viewers — a talking gelatinous entity who joins battles and provides commentary. Rue guards Faye's sword and looks set to fill the Mimir-style role of narrative anchor and combat partner. The multi-mythology bosses confirm the Everywhen isn't just Norse, which opens the door to a much wider canvas going forward.
