ForbesNYT Connections Hints And Answers For Friday, May 29

Today’s Strands has one of the most absurd Purple Groups I’ve ever seen, and the rest of the puzzle isn’t exactly easy enough to have you solve it by default.

How to Play Connections

Connections is the second-most popular NYT Games puzzle game outside of the main crossword itself, and an extremely fun, free offering that will get your brain moving every day. Play it right here.

The goal is to take a group of 16 words and find links between four pairs of four of them. They could be specific categories of terms, or they could be little world puzzles where words may come before or after them you need to figure out. And they get more complicated from there.

There is only one set of right answers for this, and you only get a certain number of tries so you can’t just spam around until you find something. There are difficulty tiers coded by color, which will usually go from yellow, blue/green to purple as difficulty increases, so know that going in and when you start linking them together.

You pick the four words you think are linked and either you will get a solve and a lit up row that shows you how you were connected. If you’re close, it will tell you that you’re one away. Again, four mistakes you lose, but if you want to know the answers without failing, either come here, or delete your web cookies and try again. If you want to play more puzzles, you can get an NYT Games subscription to access the full archives of all past puzzles. So, onto the hints and answers:

What Are Today’s Connections Hints?

These are the hints that are laid out on the puzzle board itself, but after that, we will get into spoiler territory with some hints and eventually the answers.

  • LUCID
  • WITCHCRAFT
  • IMPOSSIBLE
  • SOUND
  • PIPE
  • FEVER
  • RIGHT
  • SORRY
  • CLEAR
  • BRACE
  • NEVER
  • TILDE
  • GIGI
  • NO WAY
  • CARET
  • VOLARE

Here is a hint that gives you one word per group:

  • 🟡 Yellow Group - NEVER
  • 🟢 Green Group - CLEAR
  • 🔵 Blue Group - PIPE
  • 🟣 Purple Group - FEVER

The hints for the Connections groups today are:

  • 🟡 Yellow Group - Keep dreamin’
  • 🟢 Green Group - Can think straight
  • 🔵 Blue Group - Keyboard accessible
  • 🟣 Purple Group - Sing it loud

What Are Today’s Connections Groups?

Alright, the full spoilers follow here as we get into what the groups are today:

  • 🟡 Yellow Group - In Your Dreams
  • 🟢 Green Group - Sensible
  • 🔵 Blue Group - Typographical Symbols
  • 🟣 Purple Group - Song of the Year Nominees at the First Grammy Awards

What Are Today’s Connections Answers?

The full-on answers are below for each group, finally inserting the four words in each category. Spoilers follow if you do not want to get this far. The Connections answers are:

  • 🟡 Yellow Group - In Your Dreams (IMPOSSIBLE, NEVER, NO WAY, SORRY)
  • 🟢 Green Group - Sensible (CLEAR, LUCID, RIGHT, SOUND)
  • 🔵 Blue Group - Typographical Symbols (BRACE, CARET, PIPE, TILDE)
  • 🟣 Purple Group - Song of the Year Nominees at the First Grammy Awards (FEVER, GIGI, VOLARE, WITCHCRAFT)

Yeesh, what a puzzle today. Yellow Group has a word that stands out, as I don’t think Sorry has much in common with the other three, as it is not a “shut down” in the same sense as the others.

Green Group? That’s find, though Right and Sound mind could be tricky.

Blue Group is where things get a bit wild, as you may know what some of these symbols look like, but you probably don’t know what some are called. We have:

  • Brace - {
  • Caret - ^
  • Pipe - |
  • Tilde - ~

A very New York Times style answer there.

As for Purple Group? I mean, come on. Who knows song nominees from the first Grammy Awards which were in 1959? Your best bet was to recognize that these were songs at all, but good luck with that as well. Here’s who they were by, including some famous names:

"Nel Blu Dipinto di Blu (Volare)" – Domenico Modugno
"Catch a Falling Star" – Perry Como
"Fever" – Peggy Lee
"The Chipmunk Song" – David Seville and the Chipmunks
"Witchcraft" – Frank Sinatra

Did you actually solve this today? Good on you, if so.
