The Pitt

HBO Max

The Pitt aired its season 2 finale last night, a harrowing, emotional episode that I’d say was a more intense finale than I was envisioning, given that it’s usually when things are winding down.

Not so this week for episode 15, as we had a terrifying case where a mother and baby had to be saved from eclampsia, and it appears both were after some fraught moments. We also had Robby being forced to face his demons in the form of a few different colleagues telling him he doesn’t need an aimless, potentially deadly motorcycle journey, but actual, potentially therapeutic help for what he’s endured working in the ED for decades now. This is unfortunately not an unusual situation among real-life doctors.

Obviously, there is going to be a season 3. HBO has said that The Pitt will run yearly, and there appears to be no end date in sight. But what do we actually know about season 3? Here’s the rundown, so far, with some of this coming from a new TVLine interview with showrunner R. Scott Gemmill.

The Pitt season 3 release date

We have now confirmed that season 3 will start filming this June, which mirrors season 2’s filming start date identically. That means that once again, The Pitt is likely to hit its planned January 2027 release date. Seasons 1 and 2 arrived within a day of each other January 9, 2025, and January 8, 2026, so we’ll see if they try to stick that landing exactly, or close to it.

The Pitt season 3 time jump

We know this as well. The 10-month gap between seasons 1 and 2 seems like it was mainly put in place so we could see the return of Dr. Langdon after his treatment for substance addiction. Now, the jump is only four months, and said to be a “cold weather” season set in November. But we don’t know if that necessarily means something like a snowstorm or if it’s just…chilly. My guess is the former, as The Pitt wants as much drama as they can get.

Dr. Mohan

The Pitt

The Pitt season 3 departing cast

The only one we know for sure is Supriya Ganesh’s Dr. Mohan, where that was announced ahead of this finale. This was due to the natural course of her storyline, says The Pitt’s creator R. Scott Gemmill, even is the internet has tried to make it something more scandalous. However, it’s noted that given the fourth-month skip, she wouldn’t have left yet. That’s explained away by the fact that she’s simply not working. Ganesh has said that she could return potentially if a situation called for it, but that’s nothing official.

The Pitt season 3 potentially departing cast

The fate of Dr. Al-Hashimi seems up in the air as she is cleared to work with another attending, but Robby wants her gone. The implication, however, in post-air interviews is that the double-attending dynamic may happen, so we could see her paired with Robby once again. This is also meant to benefit Robby, given how clearly overwhelmed he’s been. Whether new characters Ogilvie or Joy return is up in the air, though it seems unlikely.

The Pitt season 3 returning cast

It’s confirmed new nurse Emma will return for this season. Also, the whole younger cast, Whitaker, Santos, King and yes, Javadi will return. Potentially going into emergency psychiatry will keep her around. There are no indications that any other core cast member is leaving besides Mohan at this point.

The Pitt season 3 new cast

We know that Ayesha Harris has been moved to season regular is happening, and it’s explained by the simple idea that she’s switching to the day shift. We don’t know any other new cast members yet, though obviously there will be an entirely new set of patients, and it stands to reason that there will be other new additions to the medical team.

Robby does go on his motorcycle trip

This was a surprising reveal, we only learned after the episode aired, where Gemmill says that Robby does actually go on his trip, but appears to be gone for four months instead of three, so this may be his first time back, or close to it. But obviously, he survives, and supposedly, he’s trying to “do the work” to start healing.

Santos versus Langdon

Gemmill says that she will eventually forgive him, and this is not going to be some endless conflict between them. No mention of him and Robby, however.
