GTA 6

Rockstar

A viral story spread this weekend that the debate over whether Grand Theft Auto 6 would cost $70 or a Take-Two luck-pushing $80, was actually aiming too low. A European retailer, FNAC, posted a list of prices for the various editions of GTA 6 a few days before preorders went live. That translates into sky-high USD costs, but as it turns out, these appear to be overstated, and this entire thing was overblown and likely inaccurate.

The listed prices from the retailer were:

  • GTA 6 Standard Edition - €89.99
  • GTA 6 Deluxe Edition - €109.99
  • GTA 6 Premium Edition - €119.99
  • GTA 6 Collector’s Edition - €199.99

Translating Euros to USD, that would make the base price equivalent to $102. Though, as most will note, that is not how international pricing usually works with games, and €90 Euros is more likely to still be $90 USD. If so, that would make the GTA 6 price well above that $70 standard, though many would argue that Take-Two could “get away with it,” given the high profile of the game.

However, industry figures have noted that the SKUs shown are placeholders rather than official markers from Take-Two, as indicated by the codes on the page. So that would make the prices random, rather than confirming they are, in fact, the real numbers sent out by Take-Two itself.

This is not to say they cannot be the final prices. Take-Two may very well make the gamble that players will pay more globally for GTA 6, given that it will quite literally be the biggest entertainment media launch of all time, and a 14% price increase ($80) or a 28% increase ($90) would be worth however many people that would theoretically price out. The idea being, “it’s GTA 6, you’ve been waiting 13 years for it, you’re going to buy it.”

This listing, however, should not be taken as confirmation of final pricing, either in Europe or mapping it out to the US equivalent in dollars. We are just three days away from the actual preorder date on Thursday, June 25, when the official price will be revealed. However, if more and more retail leaks come out and they agree on the same pricing, that would be something to potentially consider legitimate. Again, if any game was going to join Nintendo with Mario Kart World and up its price to $80, it’s GTA 6, but it’s just too soon to know for sure. Be patient, wait 72 hours.
