Ways That Human-AI Collaboration Slides People Into ‘AI Brain Fry’ And Cognitive Downturns

Watch out for AI brain fry, AI brain rot, and other cognitive syndromes as a result of prolonged usage of AI.

In today’s column, I examine how human-AI collaborations are pushing people into mental downturns, such as AI brain fry, AI brain rot, and other newly identified cognitive maladies.

Here’s the deal. The increasing use of AI at work and at home is gradually wearing down the human mind. Prolonged AI usage can readily stir mental strain and lead to muddled thinking. This turns out to be identifiable in somewhat distinctive ways. For example, AI brain fry entails your mind becoming overheated, typically on a short-term basis, while AI brain rot involves a longer-term decline in your mental capacities. I will be sharing with you a wide variety of these types of AI-stirred cognitive syndromes.

Please know that human-AI interaction is not necessarily going to usurp our minds. AI usage is not all bad. I say this because it is easy and headline-grabbing to focus solely on the downsides of AI usage. Let’s be fair and acknowledge that AI usage has upsides, including potentially bolstering human thinking. The aim would be to minimize the downsides and maximize the upsides.

Let’s talk about it.

AI And Mental Health

As a quick background, I’ve been extensively covering and analyzing a myriad of facets regarding the advent of modern-era AI that produces mental health advice and performs AI-driven therapy. This rising use of AI has principally been spurred by the evolving advances and widespread adoption of generative AI. There is little doubt that this is a rapidly developing field and that there are tremendous upsides to be had, but at the same time, regrettably, hidden risks and outright gotchas come into these endeavors, too. The AI Brain Fry Arises

Let’s get underway by unpacking one of the newest AI-induced cognitive syndromes, which is known as AI brain fry. For my detailed analysis of AI brain fry, see the link here.

AI brain fry consists of using modern-era generative AI and large language models (LLMs) in a manner that leads to levels of mental fatigue. Your mind is contending with AI that is engulfing you in an information overload and expecting you to keep up. Humans are in the loop and required to stay on top of the AI and ensure that the AI is acting properly. This principally happens in a workplace setting where you are being clocked and tasked with getting work efforts accomplished while also interacting with AI.

Some people end up saying that they have a disconcerting sense of mental hangover and even experience distressing headaches. AI brain fry can range from mild to rather severe. Another twist is that the human becomes overly attentive to AI and tends to overlook whatever tasks are at hand. Wrestling with AI in this manner is bound to adversely impact a worker, reduce productivity, and detract from solving business problems. The same elements of AI brain fry can occur at home when performing everyday tasks via the use of AI.

Categorizing Types Of AI Brain Fry

There is a wide latitude regarding how AI brain fry arises.

The nature of the human-AI collaboration and the task at hand will significantly shape whether AI brain fry is likely to occur. In addition, different people react differently to the use of AI. Not everyone will necessarily end up with AI brain fry. Lots of variables come into the picture, including the nature of the AI, the design of the AI, the fielding of the AI, the task being undertaken, the type of person using the AI, the cognitive state and status of the person, and so on.

I have identified these seven major variations on AI brain fry:

  • (1) AI Verification Brain Fry
  • (2) AI Prompt Engineering Brain Fry
  • (3) AI Context Switching Brain Fry
  • (4) AI Accountability Brain Fry
  • (5) AI Professional Identity Brain Fry
  • (6) AI Cumulative Exposure Brain Fry
  • (7) AI Hybrid Mixture Brain Fry

I will briefly describe them.

Explaining The Seven AI Brain Fry Variations

Let’s explore each of the seven AI brain fry variations.

(1) AI Verification Brain Fry. When you are tasked with verifying the outputs or actions of AI, this can lead to AI verification brain fry. You are continually on edge and seeking to figure out whether the AI is right or wrong. The AI could be right most of the time, lulling you into a false belief that there won’t be any wrong actions or outputs. Then, bam, suddenly the AI is wrong. Whew, luckily you caught it before things went awry. The issue is that you must be continually on your toes. It is frying your brain to be in such a heightened state of readiness.

(2) AI Prompt Engineering Brain Fry. AI usage often involves entering prompts that tell the AI what you want it to accomplish. In some instances, a person is constantly having to enter prompts and keep the AI active by doing so. If the person stops entering prompts, the AI is going to be idle. Pressures mount to keep feeding the AI prompts. The prompts must make sense and cannot just be gobbledygook. Your brain fries as you are tediously composing prompt after prompt, and you know that it’s like being on a spinning wheel akin to a wildly sprinting guinea pig.

(3) AI Context Switching Brain Fry. Sometimes a person is using multiple AI agents at the same time and has to context switch amongst them. You might have an AI agent that is booking hotels, and another one booking flights. The one booking the hotel comes back with some possibilities. This must be squared with the AI agent booking the flights. Back and forth, you mentally must switch context. Your mind starts to lose track of which AI is doing what. It is like experiencing a ping pong match in your noggin.

(4) AI Accountability Brain Fry. You are performing a task while using AI. Who is accountable for the result? Is it you? Is it the AI? Maybe you are being held responsible, but the way the AI is acting leaves you little, if any, control over what is taking place. You have the responsibility. It all rests on your shoulders. Yikes. Brain fry as you agonize over the fact that the buck rests with you, despite whatever the AI opts to do.

(5) AI Professional Identity Brain Fry. While using AI, you are in the back of your mind having an internal battle, wondering what is going to happen to you and your professional career. The AI is doing parts of your job. The writing is on the wall that someday AI is going to entirely replace you. Are you doing the right thing by using AI, even though it is likely patterning on you and thus you are helping to erode and expunge your livelihood? This is professional identity brain fry.

(6) AI Cumulative Exposure Brain Fry. You are using AI in a variety of ways. All day long. Moment by moment, hours on end. This starts to seem overwhelming. It is a mental response to the cumulative exposure to extensive and unrelenting AI usage. Your efforts no longer involve interacting with fellow humans. It is an entire workday of conversing with AI. Perhaps you begin to doubt that you still have the capacity to converse with human beings at all.

(7) AI Hybrid Mixture Brain Fry. The chances are that the foregoing AI brain fry variations on a separate basis might not be enough to launch you into a brain-fried mode. On the other hand, if you are encountering two or more, doing so in a hybrid mixture, then the tide starts to turn. For example, you are contending with professional identity brain fry while also dealing with accountability brain fry. It is a one-two punch that takes you mentally over the line.

That should give you an overarching understanding of how AI brain fry can differ depending on the circumstances involved.

AI Brain Fry Versus AI Brain Rot

The AI realm has recently been introduced to the “AI brain fry” phenomenon as a recognizable cognitive syndrome. You might generally know that another prior similar aspect, known as “AI brain rot,” has been around for a while. I’ve previously examined the rising tide of AI brain rot; see the link here. It was a hot topic about two years ago. Since then, it comes and goes in the news cycle.

From one perspective, you could make the case that since neither AI brain fry nor AI brain rot is a universally standardized nomenclature, they can pretty much represent whatever you want them to signify. In that sense, if you want to claim that AI brain fry and AI brain rot are the same phenomena, go for it.

In my view, AI brain fry and AI brain rot are different from each other. First, think of the world of AI brain-impacts on a widened scale as consisting of an AI cognitive ecology or ecosystem. There are different ways that AI can potentially impact human minds. AI brain fry is one instance. AI brain rot is a different instance.

I assert that AI brain fry entails:

  • Mental overheating.
  • Short-term mental exhaustion.
  • Cognitive overload.

I am riffing on the word “fry” as a means of distinguishing what AI brain fry is. The emphasis is on mental strain while actively using AI. This strain can be raised or lowered, depending on how the AI is designed and adopted.

I claim that AI brain rot entails:

  • Overdependence on AI.
  • Reduction in thinking capacity.
  • Long-term erosion of mental acuity.

I am riffing on the word “rot” as a means of differentiating AI brain rot from AI brain fry. Once again, AI brain rot can be raised or lowered, depending on how AI is designed and adopted.

The upshot is that AI brain rot is a gradual deterioration of the mind. It has long-term consequences. AI brain fry tends to have a short-term impact. It is a temporary semblance of mental fatigue. That being said, if you keep taking chances by repeatedly and deeply experiencing AI brain fry, there is little doubt that it can have longer-term impacts.

All in all, and everything else being equal, I view AI brain fry as a short-term exhaustion of the brain, while AI brain rot is long-term cognitive atrophy. To be abundantly clear, neither of the two is something to aspire to. They are both bad.

More Upcoming AI Issues

I don’t wish to be the bearer of bad news, but there is more ahead, and the advent of AI brain rot and AI brain fry are just the beginning of what’s going to happen. A sizable set of additional cognitive strains and bending is going to occur due to the pervasive and frequent use of AI.

The human-AI collaboration is creating a new relationship that involves humans interacting with probabilistic non-deterministic AI. This presents rather unique and potentially mind-bending dynamics. AI is going to saturate our work lives. AI is going to inundate your personal lives. We are on a pathway that isn’t going to stop and won’t be set aside.

I describe this as formulating a new cognitive lifestyle in light of ubiquitous AI.

  • AI Attention Drain
  • AI Cognitive Clutter Creep
  • AI Trust Trap
  • AI Judgment Slippage
  • AI Prompt Burnout
  • AI Thought Drifting
  • AI Brain Fog
  • AI Detox
  • And more to come

The World We Are In

It is incontrovertible that we are now amid a grandiose worldwide experiment when it comes to societal mental health. The experiment is that AI is being made available nationally and globally, which is either overtly or insidiously acting to provide mental health guidance of one kind or another. Doing so either at no cost or at a minimal cost. It is available anywhere and at any time, 24/7. We are all the guinea pigs in this wanton experiment.

The reason this is especially tough to consider is that AI has a dual-use effect. Just as AI can be detrimental to mental health, it can also be a huge bolstering force for mental health. A delicate tradeoff must be mindfully managed. Prevent or mitigate the downsides, and meanwhile make the upsides as widely and readily available as possible.

Ralph Waldo Emerson famously made this remark: “The meaning of good and bad, of better and worse, is simply helping or hurting.” We need to devise and use AI in ways that help humankind, including our mental wherewithal, and likewise devise and use AI in ways that do not harm humankind. That’s a vital mission worth pursuing.
