Obsession

Focus

Last week, it became clear that Obsession, a new horror film out this coming weekend, was the best-reviewed genre movie of 2026 so far. But now it’s set an even more impressive record on Rotten Tomatoes.

Obsession, now with a 97% Rotten Tomatoes score from 62 critics, is the best-reviewed wide-release movie of 2026 across any genre, not just horror. Horror movies can be hit or miss with critics or audiences, but so far, Obsession has this rare honor as we head into the latter half of 2026 soon. If it maintains these numbers, it is likely to be among the highest-scoring movies of the year. I mean, 2025’s Sinners had a 97% Rotten Tomatoes score. Here’s the synopsis of the film:

“After breaking the mysterious "One Wish Willow" to win his crush's heart, a hopeless romantic finds himself getting exactly what he asked for but soon discovers that some desires come at a dark, sinister price.”

Obsession is being called a breakout role for the obsessed girl in question, Inde Navarrette, who spent four seasons as Lana Lang’s daughter in a somewhat minor supporting role in Superman and Lois (a very good, overlooked show, in fact). Budget cuts meant she barely appeared in season 4 of that show. After that, she had a small role in Trap House, the Dave Bautista action film.

But now? Obsession will significantly elevate her profile. Here’s what some critics are saying about her performance.

  • Lady Jenevia – “The scares are effective in a highly disturbing story, and Inde Navarrette’s wildly expressive performance is what catapults the film into a higher tier of the horror genre.”
  • Reeling Reviews – “[Barker's] best effect, though, is Navarrette, whose creepy grin could star in "Smile" and whose piercing shrieks invert the meaning of Scream Queen...should keep you on the edge of your seat when you're not jumping out of it.”
  • InSession Film – “All of that on top of a star-making performance from Inde Navarrette makes Obsession easily the year’s best horror movie thus far.”

Will Obsession be a breakout for not just Navarrette, but at the box office? It releases this weekend on May 15. The good news is that it does not appear to have any significant new-release competition of note that weekend, meaning all it will have to deal with is the third week of The Devil Wears Prada 2 and the second week of Mortal Kombat 2. Horror movies like this do not need enormous blockbuster numbers to be hits, of course. And Obsession? Reports indicate it may not have cost more than $1 million, and even before that, Focus Features paid at least $15 million for distribution rights. So this thing is a hit no matter what. I cannot wait to see it this weekend.
