The new Thread Tools app
The Thread Griup
If you’ve ever wondered what your Thread network is actually doing behind the scenes, help is finally on the way.
The Thread Group has announced Thread Tools, a new diagnostic app that’s designed to provide real-world visibility into Thread networks running inside smart homes.
Available now, in beta, for iOS and Android, Thread Tools wants to take some of the mystery out of troubleshooting connected devices by showing what’s happening across a Thread network in real time.
Thread is one the key technologies behind the Matter smart home standard and received a publicity boost at the end of last year when Ikea announced 21 new Thread-based devices.
Thread is pretty much invisible to users, and that’s generally a good thing when everything is working properly. When devices won’t pair, though, stop responding or connectivity becomes unreliable, figuring out the cause can be pretty frustrating.
Thread Tools is designed to change that.
According to the Thread Group, the app can capture and share diagnostic data from deployed Thread networks, helping users, installers and manufacturers identify issues that don’t always show up during laboratory testing.
Instead of relying on trial and error, the platform provides a clearer view of network performance and device behavior in real-home environments.
For everyday smart home users, the biggest benefit could simply be understanding what’s happening when things go wrong.
Rather than treating Thread as a mysterious networking layer hidden behind Matter devices, Thread Tools gives users a way to see what’s happening under the hood and share that information when support is needed.
Most normal smart home users will never want to or need to use Thread Tools, but it’s definitely been something the ‘enthusiast’ community has been crying out for.
There are now more than 1,100 certified Thread products on the market, spanning smart lights, sensors, locks, thermostats and other connected devices.
As those networks become larger and more complex, visibility into how they operate is becoming increasingly important.
As mentioned, Thread Tools will initially launch in beta, with plans to make it available as an open-source, meaning brands can bake the functionality directly into their own apps and tools.
The Thread Group has also revealed a new partnership with the Broadband Forum, designed to bring Thread mesh networks and broadband infrastructure closer together, creating a direct path for the two organizations to work on interoperability.
For smart home owners, that could eventually translate into fewer connectivity quirks and easier device setup.
With billions of connected devices now sitting behind home broadband gateways, the two groups believe tighter coordination between smart home networks and broadband providers will become increasingly important.
