As the Adani Group begins construction of Google’s $15-billion AI data center hub in Visakhapatnam on April 28, it will add another subsea gateway for India, completing the subsea cable landings in Mumbai and Chennai. Telecom major Airtel is also associated with the project to provide support around connectivity issues.

This will connect to Google’s more than two million miles of existing terrestrial and subsea cables and establish the city as an AI and connectivity hub that not only serves India but the rest of the world.

The Andhra Pradesh Government allotted 600 acres of land for the 1 GW (gigawatt) data centre hub coming up in three locations, including Tarluvada near Anandapuram and Mudasarlova (Visakhapatnam), and Rambilli (Anakapalle). The investments are expected to be deployed over a five-year period beginning in 2026.

New gateway

Upon completion, the new gateway would help India meet surging digital demands and expand existing capacity. The AI data centre hub would have AI infrastructure, data center capacity, and large-scale energy sources, and an expanded fiber-optic network.

The Union Government expects the hub to support the growing demand for AI-based digital services across sectors, while the Andhra Pradesh government wants this marquee investment to attract other global multinational companies to the coastal cities, which is being positioned as a technology hub.

The US-based tech major expects that the new data center location will expand its capacity and provide its users with better, faster access to its services.

While Google provides the technology, the Adani group would take care of the construction and running the data centre and Nxtra by Airtel would take care of the connectivity part.
