Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ) will roll out an AI-enabled operating platform across 15 container terminals spanning nine domestic and international ports, investing up to $100 million in two phases to automate operations, improve productivity and unlock additional cargo handling capacity.

The company on Monday stated in an official release that it has expanded its partnership with US-based supply chain software provider Kaleris to deploy advanced optimisation, planning and automation solutions across its port network. The investment forms part of APSEZ’s larger plan to spend $850 million on technology upgrades and decarbonisation by 2031, supporting its ambition of handling one billion tonnes of cargo annually by 2030.

The company expects the technology-led transformation to help unlock 91 million metric tonne (MMT) of additional capacity by 2030, equivalent to nearly 10 per cent of its installed capacity, through operational efficiencies and better asset utilisation. Under the expanded agreement, Kaleris will deploy its terminal operating system and AI-augmented optimisation platform across APSEZ’s 15 container terminals, building on an earlier phase that covered six ports. “AI-enabled automation will define the next frontier of competitiveness in ports and logistics,” stated Ashwani Gupta, Whole-time Director and Chief Executive Officer of APSEZ. “While APSEZ has already deployed an end-to-end digital platform from shore to door, which provides seamless track-and-trace and integrated command-and-control capabilities, the Kaleris integration will enhance productivity, improve turnaround time and consistently deliver a superior customer experience,” Gupta added.

According to the company, the deployment of Kaleris’ Advanced Optimization platform is expected to improve productivity of key port assets, including up to 20 per cent higher productivity for rubber-tyred gantry (RTG) cranes and up to 14 per cent improvement in terminal truck productivity. The technology platform will use artificial intelligence, advanced analytics and optimisation tools to improve yard planning, container movement and equipment deployment, helping reduce vessel turnaround times and improve cargo flow through terminals.

Kaleris’ N4 Terminal Operating System will also be expanded across APSEZ’s network to improve yard utilisation, planning accuracy and operational visibility. The company currently operates 15 ports and terminals across India and four international ports in Australia, Sri Lanka, Israel and Tanzania. It has a cargo handling capacity of 653 million tonne per annum and accounts for nearly 27 per cent of India’s total port cargo volumes.
