ASML and Tata Electronics partner on India semiconductor fab

News |

By Asma Adhimi

Tata Electronics and ASML have signed a strategic partnership agreement to support the development of India’s semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem, with a focus on Tata Electronics’ upcoming 300 mm wafer fab in Dholera, Gujarat.

Under the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), ASML will supply its lithography systems and related solutions to help establish and ramp production at the facility, which is set to become India’s first commercial 300 mm semiconductor fab. The deal also covers workforce training, local supply chain development, and long-term R&D collaboration.

For eeNews Europe readers, the agreement highlights how Europe’s semiconductor equipment expertise is becoming increasingly important in emerging chip manufacturing regions. It also underlines the growing geopolitical and industrial ties between Europe and India around critical semiconductor technologies.

Lithography at the core

The Dholera fab represents one of India’s most ambitious semiconductor manufacturing projects to date, with a planned investment of US$11bn. The facility is expected to produce chips for automotive, mobile, AI and other applications using process technologies ranging from 28nm to 110nm.

ASML’s involvement is significant given the central role lithography plays in semiconductor production. The Dutch company said the partnership goes beyond equipment supply and will include initiatives to strengthen local semiconductor capabilities over the long term.

“We are excited to partner with ASML, a company known for its innovation and leadership in lithography, and for enabling semiconductor customers globally,” said Dr. Randhir Thakur, CEO and managing director of Tata Electronics. “ASML’s deep expertise in holistic lithography solutions will ensure the timely ramp of our fab in Dholera, create a resilient and trusted supply chain for our global customers, drive innovation, and develop talent locally.”

Building talent and resilience

Alongside equipment deployment, the companies plan to accelerate training programmes for engineers and semiconductor specialists in India. Talent development has become a major challenge for the country as it seeks to establish a domestic chip industry capable of competing globally.

Tata Electronics said it is already working with international partners and academic institutions to strengthen semiconductor education and technical skills. The company also previously partnered with Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC) to gain access to manufacturing technologies and process expertise.

Christophe Fouquet, president and CEO of ASML, said: “India’s rapidly expanding semiconductor sector represents many compelling opportunities, and we are committed to establishing long-term partnerships in the region.”

“Signing this Memorandum of Understanding today marks an important milestone, and we look forward to close collaboration with Tata Electronics and its broader ecosystem.”
