Ericsson and Net Feasa target smart shipping with 5G and agentic AI

Ericsson and Net Feasa are partnering to bring carrier-grade 4G and 5G connectivity combined with agentic AI capabilities to the global maritime sector, targeting container vessels first before expanding across the wider shipping industry.

The companies say the system is already being deployed globally, with early use cases including reefer monitoring, dangerous goods handling and onboard heat detection. The move reflects growing demand for always-on connectivity at sea as shipping operators look to improve cargo visibility and automate operations.

For eeNews Europe readers, the announcement highlights how private 5G, edge intelligence and AI-driven analytics are moving beyond factories and campuses into harsh, remote industrial environments. It also shows how low-earth orbit satellite links and cloud-native 5G cores are becoming key building blocks for global IoT infrastructure.

Bringing AI-ready connectivity to vessels

The partnership combines Ericsson’s Radio System portfolio and Ericsson On-Demand 5G core network with Net Feasa’s Agentic Control Tower platform. The aim is to provide secure onboard cellular connectivity while creating an AI-ready data layer that supports real-time operational decisions from ship to shore.

According to the companies, the system can scale to thousands of connected assets per vessel while maintaining carrier-grade performance across global shipping routes.

“Maritime operators need secure, reliable connectivity that follows the vessel, wherever it sails,” said Andres Vicente, Head of Southeast Asia, Oceania and India at Ericsson. “Alongside Net Feasa, we are bringing onboard 4G and 5G cellular networks to the world’s container fleets, establishing the foundation for data driven operations and AI enabled services from ship to shore. With container vessels as our starting point, the scope of what we can achieve across the entire global shipping industry is immense. Together, we are shaping the future of connected, intelligent shipping.”

The system is being driven from Singapore and is designed to provide end-to-end cargo visibility between ports and vessels at sea.

Satellite backhaul and onboard radio systems

Net Feasa, which operates as a licensed mobile network operator, deploys compact onboard radio access systems designed to minimize power and space requirements on vessels. The onboard networks use Ericsson hardware including the Radio 4490HP, Radio 2271, Radio Processor 6355 and Power 6309 units.

The companies said Ericsson On-Demand will provide the cloud-based 5G core network infrastructure, while low-earth orbit satellite systems will handle backhaul connectivity between ships and the core network.

Mike Fitzgerald, Chairman and Founder of Net Feasa, said: “Digitalization of the intermodal supply chain is at a tipping point. With the advent of agentic AI, we are gathering data from everything that moves, analyzing and securing this data, and empowering carriers to act on this data across their operations. This landmark partnership has the potential to transform the global maritime industry not just from an operational efficiency perspective but across employee safety, cargo risk reduction and compliance.”

Future roadmap plans include extending the platform into ports and additional vessel types to support broader SIM-managed supply chain visibility and AI-driven maritime operations.
