Infineon launches Moore4Power to boost Europe’s power electronics ambitions

News |

By Asma Adhimi

Infineon Technologies has kicked off a major European R&D initiative aimed at developing the next generation of sustainable power electronics for applications ranging from renewable energy systems to electric vehicles and rail transport.

The three-year Moore4Power project brings together 62 partners from 15 countries under the EU Chips Joint Undertaking program, with a total budget of €91 million. The initiative focuses on smarter integration of semiconductor technologies as conventional transistor scaling approaches its limits.

For eeNews Europe readers, the project highlights where Europe’s semiconductor ecosystem is heading next: advanced heterogeneous integration, AI-assisted design flows, and power modules built for higher efficiency and sustainability. The work also signals growing European investment in strategic technologies tied to energy transition and industrial competitiveness.

Moving beyond Moore’s Law

Rather than relying on smaller transistors alone, Moore4Power takes a “More than Moore” approach by combining multiple semiconductor materials and functions into tightly integrated systems. The project will integrate silicon, silicon carbide (SiC) and gallium nitride (GaN) technologies alongside sensing, control and communication features.

According to Infineon, this heterogeneous integration strategy should deliver gains in efficiency, reliability and power density while enabling more modular product architectures through chiplet-based designs.

“Power electronics are a decisive enabler for energy efficiency and sustainability. With Moore4Power, we are setting the next level of smart integration to achieve significantly higher energy and resource efficiency,” said Jochen Koszescha, Coordination Lead for the Moore4Power project at Infineon Technologies AG. “We are proud to join forces with an outstanding consortium from academia, research and industry to make a decisive contribution to Europe’s Clean Industrial Deal.”

The initiative builds on the earlier PowerizeD project, completed in 2025, which focused on improving efficiency and reliability in power electronics systems.

Focus on energy efficiency and industrial competitiveness

The consortium is targeting sectors where power conversion efficiency has a direct impact on operating cost and emissions. In wind turbines, the partners aim to improve harvested power through more efficient conversion systems. In e-mobility, the project targets power electronics with efficiencies approaching 99 percent, including bidirectional charging systems.

Railway applications are another focus area, with Moore4Power aiming to reduce propulsion losses by at least 30 percent.

The project also plans to accelerate semiconductor development cycles through AI-assisted engineering, digital twins and automated workflows. Infineon says the approach could cut the time from initial fab samples to validated datasheets from several weeks down to around one week.

Digital product passports and circularity

Sustainability is another major theme of the initiative. Moore4Power will integrate Digital Product Passports directly into power modules via wireless access, allowing lifecycle data such as operating conditions, health status and remaining lifetime to be tracked throughout use.

The consortium says this could support predictive maintenance, longer operational lifetimes and improved reuse of materials, helping reduce both waste and CO₂ emissions.

Alongside Infineon Technologies, the consortium includes organizations such as IMEC, ABB, Airbus and multiple European universities and research institutes.
