Using Octonous as a Product Operations Manager

This is the third article in a series on how the Octonous team uses Octonous in their day-to-day work. Each post comes from someone on the team, writing about their own role.

At mozilla.ai, I use Octonous every day to assist with our own work: feedback loops, product discovery, debugging, and internal coordination.

As a Product Operations Manager, my job is to keep the machinery of product work running smoothly: making sure releases are communicated, competitive signals don't fall through the cracks, and feedback turns into tracked work. None of this is individually hard, but it's a constant stream of small, repetitive tasks spread across several tools: GitHub, Slack, Notion, Google Docs, Google Sheets, Gmail, and analytics dashboards. Exactly the kind of work that eats a day. Octonous is useful because it connects to those places and takes the repetitive parts off my plate.

Here are my favourite ways to use it day-to-day.

Turn GitHub releases into user newsletters

Keeping users informed about new features sounds simple until you have to collect changes from GitHub repositories, understand which updates matter, and transform technical pull requests into something customers actually want to read.

That’s why I created an agent that, every week, reviews activity on the GitHub repos, identifies the product changes that shipped, groups related updates together, and drafts a newsletter in clear, user-friendly language. 

Instead of spending hours reading merged pull requests and release notes, I start with a well-structured draft that only needs a final review before publishing.

The result is more consistent communication with significantly less manual work. Because the same agent does the first pass every week and follows predefined tone and structure guidelines, the quality and style don’t drift depending on how busy I am when I sit down to review it.

Build a competitor database from everyday conversations

Competitive intelligence often comes from casual conversations: someone shares an interesting product announcement in Slack; a customer references a competing feature during a discussion. Normally, these insights disappear into chat history.

With Octonous, I simply react to an important Slack message with a specific emoji. That reaction triggers an automation that reads the message and thread, identifies the competitor being discussed, researches it, and adds a row with all the relevant information to a shared Google Sheet.

Over time, what would have been dozens of forgotten conversations becomes a continuously growing competitive intelligence database without anyone needing to manually maintain it.

Turn ideas into GitHub issues

Product improvements can come from anywhere: customer interviews, support conversations, internal brainstorming sessions, or quick notes written during meetings. Rather than manually creating GitHub issues, I ask Octonous to generate them in a well-formed format that an engineer can actually pick up.

I describe the request or bug in plain language (sometimes just pasting in the raw feedback), and the agent drafts a proper issue: a clear title, a description, and reproduction steps or acceptance criteria where relevant. Then it creates it directly in the repo. I still review before anything goes in, but the blank-page problem is gone, and issues come out consistent regardless of who originally reported the problem or how they phrased it.

This helps ensure ideas are captured while they're still fresh, without interrupting the flow of work.

Less operations, more product

The common thread isn't automation for its own sake. It's removing the small, recurring frictions that quietly consume a product operations role: summarising what shipped, catching a competitor mention before it disappears, or turning a raw report into a well-formed issue.

None of these tasks are hard on their own. But done manually, every single week, across every channel and repo, they add up to hours that could go toward the parts of the job that actually need judgment: deciding what matters, spotting patterns across feedback, and helping the team move faster.
