Share news of successful tweaks and customizations (on CachyOS)
@tapenade · 2026-05-02 · via CachyOS Forum - Latest posts
Hi, I thought it might be fun to share our varied minor (or major) success stories of tweaks and customizations (on CachyOS). Please feel free to share your micro wins no matter how great or small, pro or beginner. For example: (six micro wins I’ve experienced lately using CachyOS) I was able to remove all gvfs/gio items for less disk activity. I lost emblems as a result and some USB mounting features too, but I regained USB mounting features by installing uDiskie. I’m really happy with the results, and I’m not missing any of the gvfs services features. I can live without emblems; all my normal icons show up just fine. If ever uDiskie goes unsupported, I can just reinstall gvfs/gio and go back to how it was. When I migrated from Manjaro, I copied my favorite /usr/share/icons from Manjaro straight into CachyOS. This was admittedly reckless, but I wanted to retain several custom and varied icons that were from all over the place. The copy mostly worked, but I was shocked to learn that it caused several installs later to fail, merely because of “file exists already” type of errors… just because of the icons! I was able to fix the problems by copying from the terminal the long lists of errors during each install. Then I pasted the errors into a new file and converted the errors which listed the exact file existence conflicts into “sudo rm” commands. Again, this was kinda risky, but after cleaning it all up, I converted the text file into a bash script and ran it as root. Running the script automatically deleted all of the specific icon files which were blocking the install(s) and nothing else. Right after that, my pacman installs went through okay without errors (and installed the icons right where they already were!). It was a good learning experience! Apparently, pacman doesn’t like it when files already exist during installs and it exits gracefully instead. But I almost messed up my whole system’s ability to install packages just because of some custom icons LOL. But now I have all my custom icons, and the error messages don’t happen anymore and I know how to respond if those types of errors re-occur. I’m really glad I was able to copy a window theme that I like from Debian XFCE that didn’t seem to be available anywhere in Arch/Cachy XFCE. I literally copied the folder and contents from /usr/share/themes, I think. The theme is “Blackbird” and wasn’t from xfwm4-themes (a great source of XFCE window themes) either!. Blackbird is just plain gray with rounded corners and slight gradient yet mostly solid. I’m slightly fussy about visuals and get easily distracted by fancy colours, so it was great to get that window border happening. Last but not least, I’m running on a wimpy Celeron CPU computer but getting decent results. The computer is described as a failure on a few YouTube reviews, but I spent the minimum available on it at the store compared to other computers. It’s basically the first notch above a chromebook. Technically, this win happened when I was still on Manjaro, but disregard that for the moment… Anyways, the product literature made it seem like the computer isn’t upgradeable at all. And that’s mostly true! However, the RAM is upgradeable I found out from a YouTube tutorial on how to upgrade it’s RAM from 4 GiB to 8 GiB. I went to the store to buy 8 GiB of RAM, but they didn’t have any, only 16 GiB or RAM. So I took the risk, and bought that instead. Surprisingly, it works!! And so my current system has 16 GiB of RAM even though the computer is listed as if it can’t be upgraded at all past it’s factory 4 GiB. The internal SSD is very small and built into the motherboard and can’t be upgraded and there’s not even an extra bay for an internal drive, but it does have a USB-C port, so I was able to eventually get an external SSD drive for that and I use that for testing other linuxes without messing up my internal drive. My external computer speakers can’t really reproduce much bass at all, but I discovered that at certain EQ settings in software they sound better as long as I don’t push them too hard. Also, they are a little bit dull in the upper treble compared to my headphones and fancier speakers that I used to own. Long story shorter, I was able to install EasyEffects and hone in on the exact bass boost frequency range needed to get the external speakers to sound a lot more natural and full. I set up 2 IIR bands and capped them with a brickwall limiter. Because of this change, I’m even able to overdub some sub bass lines in my music compositions finally, since I can now hear the bass without it clipping. I did use several reference tunes to make sure that I didn’t go too far with the customizations. Conclusion : These are NOT earth-shattering accomplishments or changes, but they are little details that make me kind of happy, kinda like how the 7.0 zen kernel seems to be a bit faster than my older kernel when I archive large folders. It’s a modest improvement, but it makes me happier. Please feel free to post/share whatever micro/macro wins you’ve had during your CachyOS linux experience!
