I’ve read a lot of post, people being excited over the new Kernel 7. What is so special about it?

I have now installed the Kernel 7 and so far it’s working, but can’t see the improvements yet.

Well, what are those people excited about? Perhaps you can compare what they see as being beneficial about the kernel to your own experiences?

Seems a little strange to ask the question someplace that has shown none of the enthusiasm that you claim to be hearing.

I was talking about comments I read outside of the cachyos forum. Mostly that they are looking forward to the Version 7. I was just wondering if there are some major improvemnts. And share your experiences with the 7.

Here’s a brief summary of changes coming with the next kernel version:

Honestly, not much of note for me. It releases on Sunday and then CachyOS’s will come soon after, but I’ll do what I do for every kernel version and delay updating for a couple days to see how things shake out since I don’t see anything of critical importance.

For me personaly it’s support for SpacemiT K3 RiscV CPU, I want to get a MilkV Jupiter 2 board when it’s available and see if I can get NetBSD and Arch Linux running on it.
Also the changes for XFS, BTFS and Ext4FS are great.

Why a Risc CPU?

Several reasons:

  • Risc V is a Open Source CPU design
  • Because of the AMD / Intel / NVIDIA / Micron / Meta / OpenAI / US President circle jerk consumer computer hardware is getter rare and more expensive day by day
  • The Jupiter 2 is an absolute beast for the money it costs. Not good for gaming, but for all other daily computer tasks it has more than enough power. It should also be good for simple AI stuff like running a Ollama server with translategemma as a local translation tool so you don’t have to send out data to companies like Deepl or Google.
  • I love to play around with exotic hardware. I want to see if I can get https://archriscv.felixc.at/ running on it. Also NetBSD 11 will support Risc V 64 hardware for the first time (NetBSD/riscv), but only older CPUs. I want to try and learn what changes are needed to get it running
  • If I fail with getting Arch or NetBSD running, then also Fedora and Ubuntu 26.04 will support running on it
    For me that board is the most interresting thing since the Raspberry Pi

Interesting the board even has a 10G SFP. How powerful is the CPU? And what is the Embedded DisplayPort (eDP) for? And where will that board used? Is it meant as a more powerful alternative to RPI?

It’s hard to find benchmarks of both the RPI 5 and J2, but the J2 should be a little bit faster than the RPI 5 in general tasks (lot faster in AI tasks). There will be different versions of the board, one for servers / workstations and also one for embedded stuff. The eDP is probably for laptops or other integrated displays, there are rumors that there will be a follow up to the Musebook (SPACEMIT MUSE Book RISC-V Laptop – DeepComputing)

There are also different Risc V boards for the Framework 13 laptops. There are rumours that there will be a new DC-ROMA IV board with the new K3 chip in the future for those Framework 13 laptops too.

Probably won’t make your NAS connections any faster. It’s more about servers doing way more traffic than your LAN does. 10gbit or lower is essentially a solved problem for Linux.

For me I’m looking forward to 7.0/7.1 as hopefully there will be some improvements in support for my relatively new Intel chipset and the Xe driver. Laptop is running… okay… but there’s still a little instability.

From a purely version number point of view, it may as well be 6.20.x. Nothing really exciting about it lol.
