The best spots for the all-American beverage

Few feelings are as organically Michigan as the sour-sweet cold snap of apple cider on the tongue.
It is a ritual long paired with the first cold snap of fall. It is the unofficial flavor of flannel.
And Michigan may be its Mecca.
Mother Nature granted it a generous apple season, stretching from late August until about Halloween.
It’s a terrible thing to miss.
But there are just too many choices.
However, there are a few that bring a little of something special to the table.

Best Cider: Goodison Cider Mill
It might not be the easiest to spot, being dug into the woods of northern Rochester. Hidden on Orion Road.
Opening Labor Day Weekend, they offer fresh local farm-made goods.
It’s a petite shack relative to some later appearances on the list, but its cider is masterful. Being the closest to the university also earns it some points.
It may be small. But the cider is fierce.

Best aesthetics: Franklin Cider Mill
A huge part of the cider mill experience is the aesthetics of it all. Cold enough to want to grab your date’s hand to stay warm. The colors should be cozy.
Buried within Bloomfield sprawl sits Franklin Cider Mill. But it’s as though it was pulled from the middle of nowhere. Trees wind into the parking lot. The creek filled with ducks sweeps under it. It looks more like a surrealist painting than a business establishment. The street corn is also impeccable here.
There seems to be something of a street corn renaissance in cider mills — and here has the highlight.

Best fall vibes: Blake’s Orchard & Cider Mill
Blake’s has grown a lot recently. With recent collaborations, Blake’s has started the long road of becoming an international brand through partnerships in Japan.
But the hard cider isn’t the only thing the brand has changed in recent years.
The farm itself has almost become a tourist spot. It is a sight to behold.
The cider mill also sits next to a petting zoo, apple orchard, vineyard and a buffet line of activities.
A personal favorite here is the goat walk. It’s hard to beat drinking cider while petting a goat.
The vintage animatronics are also endearing nightmare fuel. I see Peter Pumpkin-eater in my dreams.
The best for pure fall vibes.

Best donuts: Yates Cider Mill
Sometimes the cider is the least interesting part of apple cider. It’s wonderful, of course. Exceptional even. But sometimes the donut wants to be the star of the show.
And that can be a letdown.
Every cider fan has been there. Sitting down for a perfect cup of cider paired alongside a letdown donut.
Something truly flavorless. Like the plain kind. But with all the fun sucked out.
The mill where this is completely avoidable is Yates. The selection of donuts and fresh baked goods to pair with cider is surreal. The only way to have better donut flavor and variety is to take your cider into Knapp’s in downtown Rochester, and I’m not sure they love that.
